i built the JDM programmer to this schematic
http://www.olimex.com/dev/images/pic-pg1-sch.gif , substitutiong bc337-40
with 2n3904.

i can program a 16f84a fine with this. when i try to program a 16f876a, it
programs every 8th memory location. MCLR is raised to +12.6 volts while
programming, VDD is at +4.9v. I am using icprog ver 1.05 as the software,
with the default settings for the 16f84a anda 16f876a. if anyone could give
me any advice, i would appriciate it.

thanks

Use PC software that is designed for the target you use. The 16F87xA'S
use a programming algorithm that different from the 16x84/16F62x/16F87x.

But note that Wouter said the 16F87xA (note the A. it's important) uses
a different programming algorithm than the others.

It's always a cost of time vs. money. I'm cheap as I'm a hobbyist. For a
professional, it's a no brainer.

For the rest of us cost is an issue. Probably the best cost to performance
ratio you'll find right now for your particular part is Wouter's WISP628.
Even fully assembled it's about 25% the cost of a picstart+.

Check out Wouter's site for more info...

The 87xA version of IC-PROG will be released soon ..

If you want I could send you a beta version with 12F6xx and 87xA support ...
