Anybody figure out how to get HiTech C to write the .HEX file with the
embedded chip type information that Parallax & Tech-Tools products put out?
I figure it could be done similarly to how the fuses are set (see the
__CONFIG macro in PIC.H) but I can't results.

A sample line would be:

:02FFFE004A07B0

This indicates a '74A (note that this generates the value 0x074A)

Similar codes are used for all the different chips.

Thanks!

Andy

Also, similar thing for the ID bytes.

I don't know the answer Andy but this is a nice feature I will try to put
in my ProPic programmer.
By the way, have anyone heard anything about Microchip starting to
distribute
the HiTech C instead of MPLABC?

Has anyone had PIC C hang whilst compiling?  It's happened a few times for
me now.  I'll be writting code and doing a compile occaisionaly just to make
sure too many bugs don't creep in. Then I'll make one little change which
looks to be perfectly valid Ansi C and the compiler will start compiling and
then hang after a few seconds.  I suspected that using MPLAB was the cause,
but it happend even through Hpdpic, the Dos integrated environment.  Remove
the change and it compiles OK again.

This seems to happen when there is a complex construct with several nested
IF's or SWITCH's, but I've only ever been able to make it happen by
accident, I can't force it.  The code is getting pretty big now so I won't
post it.

Any clues or hints as to what I should do to try and narrow down the exact
cause?

I have seen the same thing with Hi-Tech C several times.  Usually it is
because a "}" was not in place that should have been.  Compiler for some
reason doesn't deal well with this.  Good compiler, though.

We've just fixed one error in the compiler that did not deal well with
a missing ')' - if you come across anything like this, please tell us so
we can fix it.
