'Hard buying choices...'

Hello,

I wish to be equipped to develop in " PIC". I would wish to avoid losing
money and avoiding a nervous breakdown because of the providers who ensure a
bad
technical support (that exists, I already met some !).

For programming chips I would like a model which covers in an exhaustive way
all the range (not
knowing today what will be the market tomorrow).
I consider either a " PICSTARTPLUS " of Microchip or one PIC16Cxx Programmer
from Parallax. For these two
models I however noticed that they did not support all the chips.

In other hand I think about a compiler " C " from CCS (the PW package for 12
and 14 bits core) or a PicBasicPro from microEngineering Labs, Inc (14 bits
core, a version 16 is in
preparation). Just one amazing thing with CCS : 300$ for the product and 200$
for the support, it are not balanced!

They are not final choices. All advises, all infomations are welcome.
       Cordially.

At least you get the option of support with CCS

As for the programmer, I would lean toward the ProPic2.
If you want to build your own programmer, as I did, they
provide the schematic. Or you can buy the programmer already built.
I am really happy with the programmer and thier software. I think if you
build the programmer, the software is about $40. Well worth it.
And Octavio is on this list should problems arise.
I don't work for them, I am just very satisfied with the system
I ended up with.

Thank you for the encouraging words Mike, the web site is
even easier to remember: http://www.propic2.com

I think I may have found a hardware bug in the ProPic. I reported it to
Octavio and as far as I know he's checking it out.

If you program a 14000 with it the OSC2 pin is connected to Gnd which
may cause a S/C. I'm sure I found another similar problem but I will
have to check it over again.

PicNPoke will shortly have it's own DIY programmer with upper and lower
Vcc verification complete with a PC driven External Port Interface
module. It uses a similar arrangement by using a 40 pin ZIF socket, but
the only way I could find to include the 14000 was to insert it upside
down.

I haven't found a way of programming 16Cxx and 16c5x chips in the one
socket along with the 14000. That may involve powering the 16Cxx chips
from pins from the programming PIC. I don't know if this will work.
