I'd go straight to CPLDs, like the Lattice devices. They are in-circuit
programmable (isp), the software is free from the Lattice web site, and
they don't need an expensive programmer. Lattice (they invented the GAL)
also do an ispGAL22V10, if you need something smaller.

Get the 1 year old version of Lattice ispSynario starter CDROM (free).  The
newer ones are restricted to Lattice devices only.

The software let's you enter designs using ABEL HDL or a schematics entry.
It's very powerful.

I agree to!

I was using (3 years ago) the ISPgds! (No VHDL, No ABEL, CUPL ;( ).
Now is more easy to program with the Lattice Free Software!
Ot‡vio, why don't you try the CUPL? (ATMEL). You know that here in Brasil
there is a ATMEL OFFICIAL DISTRIBUTORS. CUPL cost U$99,00 dollar!
Lattice chips you must to import! (Voc vai gastar muito com um
despachante aduaneiro, se Ž que voc utiliza !)

Best Regards!

Miguel.

PAL's are the guys you go have a few beers with. GALs' arethe females in the establishment who look
better and better
with each beer doing it thing. FPGA's are the red, itchy
spots you get after going home with the GAL's. CPLD is
a trade name for the penicillin shot for the FPGA's.

<VBG> Sorry - I just couldn't help myself!
