'Fluxgate Magnetometer'

I've been looking for a fluxgate magnetometer (to monitor the Earth's
magnetic field for radio propagation studies), and noticed that Jameco
sells a compass module (pg 21) for $49. The blurb says that it has a 3 wire
(SPI/microwire) interface for raw magnetometer output.

Has anyone interfaced one of these to a PIC? I'd like to have the PIC get
the data from the compass, then send it to the Mac via ADB (I've already
got ADB working).

If there's anyone who's played with magnetometers and can offer some advice
(or maybe recommend another inexpensive commercial unit, or a
build-it-yourself option) I'd appreciate it.

Honeywell has a lowcost magnetic field sensor that was used
by one of the app's people at Byte Craft when he put
together a low cost compass. As I recall it was easy to work with,
he had that part of the project running in about a day.

Try going to the junkyard and getting a chrysler corp car compass this
is a pretty simple flux gate magnetometer
