I need to be able to express my design not only to myself but to others in
an organized way. A through understanding of accepted flowcharting
practices is something I lack and need to fix..fast!!!

I haven't seen any web reference; though I have not looked.
Check AltaVista or Yahoo.

However, the rules of flowcharting that I use are;

1) there is only one START and one STOP,
2) lines must never cross,
3) rectangles mean actions, only one exit,
4) diamonds mean yes/no decisions, can have one entrance and only two
exits,
5) any container can be broken down further into another diagram if more
detail is required.

The most common fault I have seen in flowcharting is a failure to adopt
the same level of detail across the chart.  If you have one rectangle
which goes to bit level detail and another which is not, then you are
creating a conflict that makes it harder to understand.

Also, think of a flowchart as software, not as hardware.  I think there
is no real sense in showing hardware on a flowchart, unless it is done
in a way that is non-intrusive, such as colour shaded dotted lines or
something.
