Does anybody have an idea, how to extract text from encrypted PDF files ?

I wanted to extract program listing from an encrypted PDF file, which
doesn't allow selecting text or images, but allows printing. I thought,
this task can be easy accomplished by printing to a file with a "standard
text printer" selected (I'm using Win95). Alas, the Acrobat Reader doesn't
work properly with this driver and everything ends with a system error.

Have I to copy the whole text manually or print and OCR it ? Isn't there
any better solution ?

Hmm...  whose encrypted PDF files do you want to extract from?  :-)

There's a patch to Ghostscript to let it read encrypted PDF files.
Apparently the first released version of the patch allowed you to do anything
you wanted with the files; they have since changed it to protect the files
somewhat.  However, since it is all supplied in source form you should be able
to fix that.

Many thanks to all who answered my question.

It's no secret at all. It's an application note AN460 from Motorola. Maybe
I'm slow-witted, but I really couldn't find the ASCII source code on their web
site.

Anyway, I got my listing now. I've decided to remain by my first idea to
print to a file, but I have used a PostScript printer driver. The resulting file
contains near the end the desired text. I've extracted it with a simple C
program.

Thanks again.
