It is available from Farnell Electronic Components, but it appears to me
that the '94 version is available by FTP at:
ftp://ftp.ultranet.com/biz/mchip/lit/appnote as 00092c.pdf (2megs!!)
I use Acrobat on a Mac to view it. (Sorry - can't speak for the PCs.)
Cheers, Murray

Just resending this message as my earlier attempt was rejected. (Shouldn't
I receive a copy of my message to the PICLIST?)
Ashkan Marami wrote asking where he could obtain the Embedded Controller
Handbook in Australia or Singapore.
It is available from Farnell Electronic Components, but it also looks
like the '94 version is available by FTP at:
ftp://ftp.ultranet.com/biz/mchip/lit/appnote as 00092c.pdf (2megs!!)
I used Adobe Acrobat on a Mac to view it. (Sorry - don't know the PC
requirements.)

The ftp file contains only one third of the book, unfortunately. The
other application notes are at the ftp site in postscript or pure code
format.
I wish I could get the whole book, too:)

I tried to view this file with ghostscript, or adobe acroread for sun or
arcoread for sgi and all failed. The first two agree that there is an
unknown token -i (not an i, actually, but an upside down !), while the
sgi version simply did coredump.
Can anybody verify that the file on the ftp server is o.k.? I did a
binary ftp and did it twice already.
Sigh,
juergen.

Just finished downloading the .pdf file and used Acroread. Worked fine
for me. I don't know what the problem might be but the file appears to
be OK. Sorry I'm not more help! :-|

I too downloaded this file. It's also 442 pages long, but that only covers
sections 1-3. The index suggests that there are more sections (4-11).
Not that the first three sections aren't interesting, but I'd like to get
my hands on the remaining portion of this handbook.
Does anybody know where I could get the rest of the embedded controller
handbook?
Thanks for any help,

Hi all
I saw an e-mail from the piclist, suggesting that the Microchip
'Embedded Controller Handbook' was available on their website
as a .PDF file. I've searched on http://www.microchip.com, but I can't
find it. Can anyone offer a more specific URL?
I'd like to get my hands on this, but since I'm a tightwad, I'd
rather not pay for it.

I don't think the book is available as ONE big .pdf file. What they
meant was all that is in the book is available on the web site....
usually as individual files. The Embedded Controller handbook is a
collection of code, ideas and circuits.
Good Luck

Hello John,
Unless you have a T-3 connection, you may want to rethink the downloading a
whole document that large. I would try either of two no-cost alternatives;
a)download only those data sheets and app-notes you actually need or b)
order the CD Rom version of the Technical Library which may contain all you
need. Both may be ordered on-line at the Microchip Web Site.

You asked about accessing the "Embedded Controller Handbook" from the
Microchip website.
The "Embedded Controller Handbook" is just a collection of Microchip
application notes. These are available from the Microchip website home page
under Developer's Toolbox / Application Notes.
These Application Notes are also available, listed by number, from the first
screen of the Microchip CD-ROM under Appnotes. They are catalogued in the
Xrefdoc.pdf file in this same screen.
In both cases, Acrobat Reader 3 will be required. This is included on the
CD-ROM.

Try to find the files DS39445?.PDF (Description of PIC16C84 inclusive
Mnemonics)
and DS30189?.PDF (How to transfer a program to the PIC16C84)
Be warned though, the Bulk-erase still doesn't work as discribed ...

Nice idea, *IF* you live in the US. I tried ordering the CD-ROM,
seemed to be a perfectly simple request. What happened? Nothing for
several weeks, then a letter in the post on Microchip letterhead but in
an envelope postmarked in this country, saying that the request had been
passed on to the local dealers and they would contact me in due course.
THAT was several weeks ago. Gee whiz, ALL they had to do was to mail
me the CD from the US. Even by the cheapest surface mail, not even
asking for air mail, it would have arrived in a few weeks. What have I
got now? *Nothing*, apart from a totally, 100% useless letter!
OK, I feel a *bit* better, a bit wiser, but no data.
Cheers,

Hi Paul,
Prompted by the recent messages on the list, I just submitted a request
today for the CD-Rom so it will be interesting to see if I get the same
result.
It seems we have the same luck in these types of matters.

Looks like its US v Rest of the World - I too am waiting since
December. Like Paul I did get a letter saying local agent will deal
with but nothing heard..
Paul, about 18 months ago I phoned my local UK agent and they mailed
me a CD-ROM within a week or so - if you are desperate perhaps a call
to your local agent will accelerate.

Well I *do* live in the US and I'm not doing much better. My letter
from microchip is dated 2/4 and I've yet to hear from my "local
Microchip Technology sales rep" and they are just down the road.

I live in the US and I have also requested the technical library CD
and got the same letter. It has been several weeks for me as well.
I imagine that this is just the way the literature distribution
works! At least my "local distributor" is truely local for me. If
I don't get that CD soon, I'll just drive down there... :-)

I received mine last week from my local "distributor"

Don't hold your breath waiting for anything but a letter.
I have circled bingo cards twice in professional magazines over
the past two years as well as requesting one on the web site. I always
got a letter instead.
Digikey was always out of stock of CD-Roms for sale. The only way I got
one was to buy a PicStart Plus.

I'm not keen on prolonging this thread.
That Microchip tech support is appalling is not news.
I'm wondering if it depends who you are?
Maybe they wish to discourage small scale or hobby projects?
I asked for one as a private individual, and got no response.
My employers are a big buyer of PICs and got given several CDs.
A colleague even threw one away!
I suggest everyone redirect their frustrations upon those
responsible for creating it: Microchip!

It's the same for me, here in italy...
maybe microchip is reading these lines?
anyway, if you are interested in these services (i.e. samples, data sheets,

Hi
I don't know if the document on the 16C84 (30445c.pdf) has all the detai
ls
about programming the chip. In my case with the 16F84 the datasheet only
refered lightly to the subject and directs us to the familly documentation.
I found the chapter on ICSP (In Circuit Serial Programming) under the name
31028a.pdf (chapter 28 of the PICmicro MID-RANGE MCU FAMILY manual,
Microchip ref. DS31028A). The info on this document is also usable for off
circuit programming.
If you have any trouble reaching it on the Microchip Web site, just ask
me
by private E-mAil and I will send it attached (its only 98KB).

I've never had a problem getting CDs from Microchip distributors, one
phone call and within a week I have one.
I actually prefer printed data sheets, and will always try to get one
for each PIC I work with.
Some time ago, Microchip sacked their most prominent UK distie (Polar,
who now represent Atmel and the AVR), leaving the others to pick up the
business. At that time it was very easy to get CDs and data as the disties
were keen to become your preferred supplier.

Yeah, I get Mchip guys phoning up and pressing me for meetings
that have no particular purpose (other than to keep us aware of
their presence) and would waste half an hour or more of my time.
And yet when you want to talk to them they're not available because
they're in 'presence' meetings with some other customer!
When I do get hold of one they take ages to find someone with more
than a salesmans depth of knowledge about PICs.
I've not heard of Panasonic micros, but I shall investigate them
on mcoop's recommendation.

Another nice thing about the eastern companies is that, if you
twisttheir arms a bit, you can get very, very expensive development
tools for free. (Unlike the infamous Microchip compiler rip-off
where you pay for something you never get)
We got the complete Cosmic set from Motorola.
Motorola buys compilers at retail from the developers and hand
them out to the customers. You get full support directly from the
developer. (Unlike Microchip MPLAB-C support)
I know they also give away Bytecraft compilers which, as you
know, also makes the only single-solution compiler for PICs.

Been there, done that.

Out of curiosity, are these the factory reps you are talking about, or
the
distributor reps ?
Where our distributor (Pace) gives us incredible service, our
factory reps also soar to the depths that some of the people on
the list have mentioned.
It would be interesting to know if the lack of interest is caused
by the lack of direct incentive (commision), or because of some
other low morale problem.
BTW I see the BBS has ceased to be. It is a great pity because
the sysop was very good with getting new stuff on the BBS.
I don't know if it is the same guy who runs the web site (Very
cool site IMHO, but no new stuff like the BBS) now.

It's seems like the fact that Canada/USA border being the largest
undefended
border in the world does not help Microchip to deliver their CD. I,
also, requested
the CD from Microchip website in December. A month later I received a
letter from
Microchip stating that my requested was passed to my local dealer... I
am still
waiting to hear from him.
It seems I am not as important to this local dealer's eyes than to
Microchip !!!

Nope, I live in the US, and that is all I got. A week after I
submitted the request I received a nice letter telling that a local rep

That's an interesting fact which I didn't know, but I guess I interpreted
the meaning of "eastern" wrong. I though "eastern" meant from Asia, in this

Oops, sorry, I didn't read your message properly when I replied
earlier. You are quite right, Motorola isn't an 'eastern' company.
Motorola's corporate offices are located in Schaumburg, Illinois.

and the CD ROM - I simply contacted our UK supplier, Future Electronics
in Manchester, tel: 0161 877 8844, who sent me both items, speedily and
efficiently.
I would recommend getting your PICs from them if you are in the UK as they
seem to be very efficient.

Don,
I had the same experience as Paul.( ie Dear John letter after several
weeks)
Sort of makes you wonder about their customer service attitude.
They could have responded via EMAIL, as you have to give your address
in order to register for the CD.

I'm not sure about Microchip. I have very good response from Hewlet Packet and
have
been receiving product updates in CD-Rom & Floppies.

I am still trying to get my CD-ROM. I have emailed them 3 times since Cindy
Trotto
from Microchip posted top this list. I have had only one answer telling me that
my CD
will be "mailed out this week". Well, a week has passed, and still no CD. To
make things
look worse, I reside within the conntinental US!
I may not be an engineer myself with purchasing power, but I *do* have influence
over many engineers (potential customers) that I associate with. Great product,
poor (so far) support.
I want to thank the likes of Cindy and others at Microchip that have attempted
to get
the CD to me,, but I fear that matters aren't toally within their hands. I
could just
buy the CD from Digi-Key but who knows how up to date it will be. I also don't
care to
pay $4 for something that should be free.
Just my $.02...

Microchip still hasn't sent me my "happy fun kit" that I was promised at
the embedded systems conference back in October.
Not to say that this kind of thing is not typical.
At least the parts are usually available!

Hmm....asked my rep for a sample....he shows up with
them a few days later...and brought me the CD..didn't even ask for it!!
Well, in most cases, the inquires go thru the local reps. Make a case
with them or with Microchip that the rep is not doing their job!

I contacted my local sales rep after waiting serveral weeks
from the time I recieved the original "Your name has been forwarded to
you local sales rep" letter from Microchip. The local rep said they
would "Take care of me right away". I haven't heard from them since.
Meanwhile, Cindy Trotto posted the PIC list response. I decided to wait on
the "Local Rep" for another week. No luck. I then emailed the address that
Cindy posted. Not a word for two weeks. I contacted Microchip again
and got a respose telling me that my CD would be mailed that week and
that I should contact them (this week) if it did not arrive. Well, it didn't
arrive so contacted Microchip again today and got an immediate response
notifying me the my CD was being FedEx'd to my address.
We'll see if it gets here....
All of this trouble for a CD! I am not even asking for free samples!
I am only an "honest" hobbiest with many engineer friends and co-workers.
I think, even though I will not be buying thousands of parts, that they
would value my good will and my free word of mouth advertising!
I might as well start pulling old 8031 and 8051 mcu's from discarded
modems!

It may well be that hobbyists are not valued by their sales reps....
I think it is dishonest for me to pretend to be a manufacturer or an engineer.
Dan,,,, patiently awaiting my CD.

Tell 'em before you book the order for 2,500,000 pieces you need the "kit."
It works for me all the time. I might just have to try it again soon.
BTW, I have 31 copies of their product selection guide. Don't bother
checking off any Microchip numbers on those bingo-cards -- that's all
you'll get -- regardless of what is offered in the blurb.
Anyone know when Microchip is gonna wise-up and fix MPLAB so it works on
NT? Those micro-51's are starting to look easier and easier to develop
for. The PIC is a great uP but... Whom at Microchip should I pound with a
"clue-by-four"???
