'Downloading from Microchip's site'

Hello, fellow PICers...

I've been trying to download MPLAB 3.09.02 from Microchip's WWW site.  I
've tried downloading four different times, two different nights.  Each time,
the download terminates after approximately seven minutes.  Seems to be time
based, rather than number-of-bytes-downloaded based.  Not enough time for me
to get the entire file.

  My question is -
Do others have this problem, and if not, what's the fix??

A somewhat related question - Do other people besides me get consistently
slow transfer rates??  I average between 100 and 400 bytes/sec from
Microchip, whereas I often get 1.4 to 1.7 k from other sites.  Perhaps they
could do a "mirror" site on the East Coast?

And _also_ 8^), I can no longer get at Microchip's BBS via Compuserve.  It
refers me to ftp to mchipbbs.microchip.com .  When I use Netscape or
Netcruiser to go there, my browser crashes (I think this is related to the
non-existence of such an ftp site.)  Ans thoughts??

Enuf for now - thanx for listening  8^)

yup, me too. I'm using MPLAB version 2.21 and want an updated version
so I can use MPSIM on another machine here that doesn't have a
picmaster. Best I've managed is almost 600k of MPLAB3.09's 1.9MB.

As for slow transfer rates, I don't have a 1M/sec connection..., I've got
a v34 modem (and a p-75) and usually manage to connect at 24k - I've not worked out what data rate I get over a long period of time. I'm not in a position
to invest in "better kit" either, as we don't use the 'net enough to warrant
a direct connection, so I make do with a pipex dial service (auto mail
forwarding) and microsoft exchange.

Hi Shel,
I don't have any problem with downloading. I did it during the last 20
minutes (MPLAB309.EXE and LBHP309.EXE). No problem. I logged on to the
ftp site MCHIPBBS.MICROCHIP.COM with my registered user name and it
worked very good.

I got the CIS message too. I was getting a 'server error' on
mchipbbs.microchip.com until yesterday. Could not find the new
MPLAB on there yet.

I tried it last night and had the same problem.  Have you had any luck since
then?  I'm going to try the ftp site instead of Netscrape.  I haven't tried
the BBS yet.

I just downloaded MPLAB and had no problem, but I have a direct
internet connection so it doesn't take over seven minutes.

I got an 11k transfer rate at 2:30 EDT.  I am located in New Hampshire,
so it was a west to east coast transfer.  I don't think it's a problem
with Microchip's site.

Hi,

I have the same problem: I start to download e.g. 40122d.pdf (832K of
PIC14000 data sheet). The transfer rate is around 0.5 KB/s.  Then it
goes down and down so that the estimated download time shown in the
download box stays always around 50 minutes  =:^0  and sometimes increases
during the "download" to more than 1:10. Eventually, the transfer
aborts at about 300-400 KB.

I think that the server containing Microchip documents is very
strange because at the same time when I have the problems with
download I can access all Microchip WWW pages (e.g. press releases)
and download them with normal speed.

Hi,

For people, who have problems with downloading from Microchip's
WWW site, I would advice to use FTP mail service provided by some
servers. You simply send requests to the server in an E-mail message,
and it sends you any file you want via E-mail in response. This way
you can leave all downloading problems to the mail server.
I personally use the BITNET FTP Server on the Warsaw University.
To get e.g. the PIC14000 data sheet I would send following mail to
@spam@BITFTPKILLspamspamplearn.edu.pl :

ftp ftp.ultranet.com uuencode
user anonymous
cd biz/mchip/lit/assp
binary
chunksize 0
get 40122a.pdf
quit

Unfortunately you can only get files from FTP sites this way. Send "HELP"
in the body of your mail message to the server to obtain more info.
