Hey all,

I hope some of you remember the thread about microchip docs.  Well after
several emails I still have not gotten any help.  Seems they just have too
many customers to add another one to their list.

I visited several semiconductors companies web sites and requested
literature on their products, here are the results:

Maxim - Ordered it tuesday of last week, got it on friday, same week.
Texas Instruments - Ordered it thursday, got it on monday(today).
MicroChip - Ordered it sevaral times, have yet to recieve it.
Atmel - will order docs soon.

Has anyone else ordered literature from any other company and got it in
just a couple of days?  If so, I would like to know who.

    Yep,

It seems the Microchip CD ROM will never turn up if you order on
the
web-page. I've ordered it several times too ... no joy. I'm sure
it's
due to Microchip passing the requests to their disties... who
promptly
'filter' the list into the bin, to save costs. (in the belief that
the
requests are just a load of students that won't order X million PIC

    that quarter)

Most other companies have in-house literature mailing departments,
staffed by people who live to mail things to arrive next day (if
not
sooner!). It makes sense - Gives the impression of a company on the

    ball.

       Steve Lawther

PS - I know I sound like a distie-basher, but it is true only for
the
90% that give you no useful value-added, then change you 30%+ extra

    for the pleasure.

I have ordered a Data books from following companies.
Maxim,
Telcom,
Temic,
ICT,
Burr-Brown,
Micrel,
Apex,
Zilog,
ISD,
Rainbow (Sentinel dewelopment kit).

Response time always was short for these companies
and literature and CD-ROMs was freee for me.

Regards,
Harijs.

Microchip CD ROMs:
Some people are seem very keen to get hold of these.
Given the difficulty, do these people deserve your business?

We had two reps in yesterday who gave us a couple of CDs
(June 1998 issue, navigate by a net browser).
They're keen enough for bulk buyers,
so we get more CDs than we need.

I have some older ones: one 1997 first edition,
and two 1996 Third edition. If anybody could use these
then let me know - the nearer the UK the cheaper for me
to post. I could perhaps get my mate to use his CD writer
to make a few copies of the latest one if people don't
mind paying a few quid for him to do it.

Interested?

I guess that it depends on 'who' you are.  I order thru
our local reps usually, and get a pretty quick turn around.  Samples the
same way, got more samples of stuff than you can shake a stick at.  Of
course, when you are buying millions of dollars of parts, they are
always happy to serve you.  I'd contact your local microchip rep and see
what the story is.

Oh great - I just sent  a request for docs to Microchip :-(

Their website is very good but sometimes there's just no substitute for a
book...

Did you ever try to ask them (Directly or thru vendors) _anything_ .  I
tried to get a working Bulk-Erase routine for the 16C84.  Micro-chip itself
does not answer E-Mail.  Vendors can't get answers either (I've tried 4 of
them).  It looks like the only thing that is done is selling chips.

The one person that took an effort to answer requests for Micro-Chip's CD
is currently missing. (Is he ? ...)

Greetz,
 Rudy Wieser

P.s.
I've got a working Bulk-erase routine now, thanks to the people on this
list.
_NO_ thanks to microchip though .... :-((

This is an intersting thread, in that microchip IS on
the list, I wonder if they are listening to this.  Actually, I think the
first defense is the local reps.  Its their job to understand customer
needs, and to know who they can talk to at the factory.  My rep, Western
Region Marketing, does an excellent job, and has even brought in the
field app engineer to talk to me.  It seems that if the rep is not doing
the job, the vendor usually finds a new avenue to get info out to the
customer base.  Sales = $$$ to the reps, so they usually like to do the
right thing.  But of course, not everyone can be so lucky.  But I would
think if the rep isn't doing it, you need to talk to the owner of the
rep company, or to the factory person that handles the reps inquiries.
Sometimes it takes some digging to find that right person, but well
worth it.

Brian, I normally order docs and samples from the local Microchip rep.
Obviously not all folks have a local rep and/or one that is responsive to
customer needs but I'd give that a try. Micro Sales here in Portland OR,
have provided excellent customer support. I don't know what is going on
with Microchip but there was a recent discussion where folks had a hard
time trying to get their latest CD. This was especially true for folks
outside of the USA. Apparently someone at Microchip heard about the
problem and folks finally got it. They certainly need to take care of
this problem. On the surface, it sounds like they are not interested
unless you are ordering 10K+ chips...

I had the same problem. It seems all Requests are ending up somewhere
by the reps.

I still not have figured out when you get the CDs or info materials
and when not. I am sharing my information with a collegue, so we
order mostly the same stuff and alwayse recieve from different
companies.

I work for a large multinational computer company ... I requested the
documentation CD from Microchip, and they sent me this really nice
letter saying they had passed the request onto the local reps in Oz.

That was March, I think.  Still no CD.

Although I haven't pushed it.  There are other suppliers quite willing
to supply based on only _one_ inquiry.

More purchasing decisions are made based on relationships than technical
qualities of a product.  A pity.

Let me take this opportunity to plug Future Active.

They have been very responsive with whatever we need and
we haven't yet cut any orders of more than 20!

The only major purchase we made was a scope for $1300.  So,
I agree, you guys must not be asking nicely or something.

I think I'll send my rep flowers or something. (gushing tears)
