Can anyone recommend a display driver to drive a
6 or 8 digit dot matrix or 16 segment LCD display?

James, the ICM7218 series (Harris 7228) supports up to 8 digits,
common anode and cathode, internal digit storage, decimal point, etc.
You can find this part from Jameco, JDR, Digikey, and other vendors.
Maxim also makes a driver, MAX7229 which provides a serial interface.

Try National MM5452 or MM5453. Each drives 32 ('52) or 33 ('53) segments
with a common backplane. Doesn't matter at all how the segments are
arranged (other than in your software).
You might also check around on the National and Motorola sites for more.
Several of these will do the trick. You can get a sample to drive a
4-digit 7-segment from my LCD-422 PDF (ask for a copy).

How about the Microchip precessor that drives 32 LCD segments?

The 5452 is _much_ cheaper. By about a factor of 10!
