'Dirt Cheap (but production available) displays.'

I have a project that is extremely cost sensitive which requires a small
display. I could probably get away with 2-3 LED's but this product
would be much more usable if I could somehow gain 3-4 alpha digits for
under $2 or so (Qty 100) instead of the LEDs. This needs to be
commercially obtainable and not surplus so that I can manufacture this
product on an ongoing basis.
I seem to recall some sort of 4 character display mentioned on here but
I can't find it in my archives. I've dug through the Mouser, Digikey,
and Jameco catalogs and don't seem to see anything which quite fits the
bill.
Ideas?

Not sure how the price works out these days but what about 7 segment displays?

You should be able to get a low-end HD44780-type LCD (8 or 16
characters, STN) for less than $2 at 100+ from various sources in China.
An alternative could be a row of star-burst type LED segment displays,
but I don't know how cheap they can be obtained.
Maybe you can be creative with 2 5x7 led-array displays and scroll your
message?

Doubts you may found such thing under $2 here. But It's a good starting point.

Look at Kingbright; they have some delicious 14-segment alpha LED
displays in all colors. You might
have to special-order them, though.

Have you considered 14 segment LCDs? They require a driver, though,
so you may need to switch to a PIC with LCD capability.
Digikey has 153-1113-ND for instance, which has 8 characters. I
expect some asking around in Asia will net you a 4 digit version for
tens of cents.
