Hi Niklas,
There are quite a few kits around. I bought the P16Pro from
http://dontronics.com/
for $25US and another $20US to register the programming software. I also
bought a 40 pin ZIF socket. It does all the serial programmed pics.
I'm happy with it so far but I've only programmed the 16F84.
http://www.pipeline.com.au/users/newfound/
....also have kits, and a programmed pic to convert the P16 PRO to an
MPLAB compatible programmer. I'm getting this just for the
convenience.
So, my opinion is.....
If you don't have a lot of time a kit won't take very long at all.
(30mins - 1hour). And you may as well get one that does most of the PIC's
because they don't cost too much. There are many more kit programmer than
those mentioned above.
Hope this helps,
Stewart Pye

Hi all
I need a development programmer that is:
1) able to program at least 16C63
2) cheap
3) Reliable (somewhat at least)
I am able to build my own but my sparetime is somewhat(!?!) limited.
What is your opinion? Should I buy Picstart Plus (will not conform to
2))?
Regards,
Niklas CarlŽn
