A few notes on degaussing a TV set or monitor....
DO NOT USE A TAPE BULK ERASER!!!!!!!!!
The magnetism of these is so strong, unless you are VERY careful and
know exactly what you are doing, you WILL suck the mask of the CRT out
of place, making the rainbows PERMANENT. I'll be new CRT time. I
know, some of you have done it with no ill effects, but you were VERY
lucky. Think of this, the bulker is strong enough to lift a VHS tape,
it will have no problem distorting an approximately 22 ga piece of mesh.
BUY A DEGAUSSING COIL
These can be had for as little as 30 dollars US, there is a vendor
here on the web somewhere.
If you cannot get a degaussing coil, TRY the one in the TV, turn the
TV on and off at approximately 30sec intervals. The degausser has a
timer which keeps it from heating up.
If all else fails, call your friendly TV repairman, he can make short
work of it and if you sweet talk him, he may even do it for free.

It's no good only leaving it off for 30 secs, TV's don't have a timer,
they use a device called a 'posistor' to feed the deguass coils. This
consists of two thermistors, a negative coefficient one across the
coils, and a positive coefficient one feeding the coils.
Some modern TV's now use a two terminal 'posistor', this is just a
positive coefficient thermistor and is used to feed the coils.
Anyway, back to the story, these posistors get seriously hot and take a
LONG! time to cool down, they need to be fully cold to give the maximum
deguass energy - at 30 secs you wouldn't get any, I would suggest at
least half an hour, and possibly more!.
