Does anybody know how the thread turned out on DTMF detection via the
PIC? Is it possible, or would a Scenix chip be required.

I've been away but I'm interested in the topic...

Stephen,
most common way I have seen is to use DTMF decoder chip interfaced with
pic to display numbers. the pic will get decoded data and output it to
LCD.
If you use serial display you can use 12c509.

I tend to agree.  Surely the cost benefit of *not* using a dedicated
DTMF chip is marginal, offset by much poorer (noise etc.) performance?

And of course, if you add an inexpensive little 74HC595 or HCF4094,
you should be able to do it all on the 12C509 *without* the serial
adapter for the HD44780-based LCD module.  Sorry, my hobby-horse again!

It's possible, but difficult. In my experience, external analog circuitry
is necessary. If you're not planning on selling a whole bunch of these,
then you're most probably better off with the dedicated dtmf decoders
interfaced to a pic. But it's awfully tempting to try it there's a pic
that's already there doing other stuff.

Hi,

that decoder calls MT8870 for example. It works fine and pretty simple.
