Is it poss. that with around (no ammeter conected at the time) about a 1/4
of an amp going through i crystal it could start to behave erativally? Not
blow all together but to occasionaly execute a few instructions?
Or is it more likely that the (hardy at worst of times) pic was damaged...
(it did melt through the breadboard)

It's hard to burn out a crystal in a typical PIC circuit. If the crystal
were damaged it would probably refuse to oscillate at all. More liely,
the PIC is damaged. Why not replace both and see if the problem goes
away?

The next jr. achievement level above the "sparky" is the "slaggy."
This is where you fuse the entire project into a molten mass of
metal, plastic and silicon. Extra points if you mount the cinder
on a trophy stand afterwards.

We had an eprom gang burner once, it would do 8 at a time, and three were
usable.
Three would be dead, and two would be cracked in half, or melted into the
sockets.
I did melt an eprom once (ceramic case).

Well... a quick ~(failed) varify produced lots of garbage so I reprogrammed
the PIC, and no problem! (apart from the B/board which is properly fried...
