Hi
Does anyone have the formulae for building air core coils with an
inductance value and finding the inductance from coil measurements.  I know
they exist but I can't find them!

Cheers

Tim

Tim et.al.,

I'm sure that everyone in the world jumped on this easy one.

For the approximate inductance of a single-layer air-core coil

L (uH) = ( d*d*n*n )/(18d + 40*l)

where

L = inductance in microHenries
d = coil diameter in inches
l = length of coil in inches
n = number of turns

Someone has already come up with an inductance meter and capacitance
meter using a PIC with an LCD display.  See

http://www.mtechnologies.com/mthome

for discription and info.  Meter is made by AADE (Almost All Digital
Electronics).

Try the Raido Amatures Handbook (RSGB) there is lots of stuff in there about
coils ect mainly for RF but unless you are using litz wire for skin effect
then I suppose the fourmula will work.

Tim,
       check out the ARRL Handbook--its a ham radio publication that would
explain how to do the calculations in detail.  If you can't find one, send
me a personal e-mail and I will e-mail you the info.

I have a small VB program that calculate the inductance of an air core
coil.
Coil size must be expressed in millimeters ( length, diameter, turns).
Slides are provided to vary easily your input by 1% steps.

I can send you the exe if you want it. (8.10K)

As i recall, to get maximum inductance you must stick to this physical
proportion( length = diam/2).
