'C compiler opinions?'
2000\03\12@231740 by Dale Botkin

I've been using CC5Xfree for a couple of weeks now.  After the initial
pain of learning C by example, some things are a lot easier in C, some
would be a lot easier in assembler, but overall I guess I'm a C convert.

I'm pretty much a hobbyist at this for the time being, so paying for a
compiler is impractical at this point.  I may switch to something
bigger/faster/better if I have any luck with the next killer PIC-based
app, of course.  Are there other free C compilers I should look at?  How
much trouble will there be later on switching from one compiler to
another, if I do?  Any glaring shortcomings of CC5X I'll regret later?
I've used assemblers for quite a while for 8051 and PIC stuff, but like I
said, I'm a C newbie.  I like this one because it's free and integrates
with MPLAB.

The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds
new discoveries, is not "Eureka!" (I found it!) but "That's funny ..."
