the school should buy.

I'm in the process of learning about the PIC, so I thought I'd give
'Programming and Customising the PIC Microcontroller' a whirl. It's by
some bloke, name of Predko. Verdict: perfect for someone (like me) with
a modest knowledge of electronics and a burning desire to learn. As far
as I can tell, it proceeds to a reasonably advanced level, so it shouldn't
disappoint. As a bonus it's written clearly and with a light sprinkling of
humour (who's that blushing at the back?)

Do not buy "A Beginners Guide To The Microchip PIC"
by Nigel Gardener, it's not worth the toilet paper

Charles,
I'll second the vote for Myke Predko's book. It goes
from basics to fairly advanced and has good practical examples. Since
I bought it I've only put 1 newbie question append to Piclist ;-)
I borrowed the Nigel Gardener - Beginners Guide from my library. It's
quite expensive and doesn't cover anywhere near the detail of Myke's
book. I didn't find it too useful personally.

I also have to vote for Myke's book.
It is easy to read and will lead you step by step through the learning
process.
I especially liked the way he leads you through the experiments.

"PROGRAMMING AND CUSTOMIZING THE PIC MICROCONTROLLER"
Check out http://www.myke.com for more info. I believe it is available from
amazon.com and most retailers. Wonderfully useful book for beginner
and advanced.

A good book I'd recommend to anyone is called "Design with PIC
Microcontrollers", by John B. Peatman, Prentice Hall, 1998, ISBN
0-13-759259-0. You can purchase it from http://www.amazon.com or from your fav
bookseller (usually via special order).
Happy reading!
