Does anyone have a part no. / manufacturer for a similar component to the
Allegro 5841 / 5842 serial input latched drivers.

I don't need the 500mA Bi-MOS output, as I need to drive larger loads (and don't
want to pay the premium for the expensive output stage!)

The basic idea is a cascadable synchronous serial to parallel register (I expect
that the whole array will be 256 bits)

How about the 74HC595. Can cascade as many bits as you like with only three
lines (Data, CLK, LATCH). Even has a separate Output Enable so that you can
3-state the part.

 Howz about a plain old CMOS CD4094?   Stick Fat Fet's on that and you
can drive anything you want...
