'Accelerometer source(s) needed'

Anyone know of a good source (or two) for inexpensive (<$10, preferably
<$5) accelerometers? They need to be relatively sensitive but not overkill,
and quite robust. Something like Analog Devices ADXL series but cheaper.

Thanks in advance.

Those are pretty unique devices right now.  You won't find them cheaper
until they start going whole hog in Taiwan doing micromachining.

Since a large portion of their infrastructure will be under construction
for a while, I wouldn't hold my breath.  But, if I were a plant manager
whose factory was destroyed, I think I know what I would rebuild it to make...

It looks like Taiwan's fab lines suffered only minor damage. I'd
imagine repair, calibration and test delays will keep some of them
off-line for awhile. It remains to be seen what, if any, impact this
will have on xRAM supplies or other products.

Back to the real tragedy, may God comfort those folks...

Taiwan, from what I saw in a brochure from a vendor once, is a
predominantly Christian country.  Very few
Buddhist/Hindu/Catholic/Mormon/etc. there.

Consider a small piece of solder epoxied to the needle of
a phono pickup for high audio frequency accelerations.

Consider a speaker with a lead weight glued in center and
lots of holes punched for lower frequencies.

Make an (RF) tuned circuit tuned by a small coil with a sliding
slug. Suspend slug on small brass coil. Read oscillation frequency
off into comparator, divider, and into pic.

For DC:

Now, a 3D version:

Get a hollow cylinder and fill with alcohol (water will get bacterial
growth),
put a pressure sensor on each side of each axis (one at each pole and 4 on
equator).
Pressure on sensor is proportional to the acceleration in that direction.

eliminate sensors in uninteresting directions. If you only want 1 direction,
just use a
length of plastic tubing, if you know the direction of acceleration.

For a "one bit" maximum value test -
suspend a ball bearing in a cage of rubber bands. If the ball falls out,
you've exceeded the limit.

all this depends on:

a) how many bits?  What data rate? What frequency response? How rugged is
rugged? What g range?

For many applications, a singe pass/fail bit is enough, and for many
applications a maximum value is enough.

almost any physical quantity can be measured by converting it to either
resistance or light intensity (and thence to
resistance), or by changing the physical dimensions of a tuned circuit, or
by constructing a battery.

max value, pass fail equipment can be quite crude. They sell shipment
monitors commercially that you stick on
the shipment - they have a glass vial with a membrane, if the membrane fails
the chemicals on opposite sides mix
and they turn color. These cost pennies each.

Uh? aren't Catholics and mormons christians?
I was under the impression they were.

As for cheap accellerometers......
is it for threshold, or linear measuremnets?
The system used in automotive airbags is based on a threshold system, and is very cheap.
it is based on a gold plated ball bearing, held in place by a magnetic field. Upon sufficient accelleration, the ball bearing "breaks away" from the magnetic field and touched two contacts, allowing the gold plating to close the contacts, and complete a circuit.

No.  Catholicism harks back to the days long before Christ.  Catholic
practices were actually one of the things that sent the Jews into Babylon.
I don't have the exact references right now, but if anybody is interested
I can dig them out.  They are all in the Bible, probably in Lamentations.
When the priests of Rome (who were practicing the same thing, just with
different names - Jupiter/Zeus/Baal etc.) simply changed the names again to
fit the current popular religion.  Constantine just made it official - all
the Roman priests were suddenly "Christian" priests.

Mormons?  No - they have a different Jesus Christ.  The entire thing of
CHRIST-ianity is who Jesus Christ is.  He is not a created being.  He is
not one of many gods.  He is God, Jehovah, as revealed to the Jews in the
law and prophets, which is commonly referred to as the Old Testament.  It's
beyond our understanding (mine anyway) how God is a trinity, but it's also
quite obvious that that's what the Bible says, from cover to cover.  I
don't have time right now to get into it.  If you interested, ask private
and I'll reply private.

>As for cheap accellerometers......

Not cheap - only accurate and small.  ADXL202.

I know this isn't the place for another religious debate, but I at least
have to make a quick statement in response to this.

Andy, I normally agree with what you have to say, but you are wrong here.
If Catholics are not Christians, then there were no Christians before
Luther. You should take a look at what the early Christian writers (within
a couple of hundred years of Christ) had to say,and how consistent their
message was right up through church history.

BTW, I don't think you are grumpy :-) It is just plainly obvious that you
are often very busy.

Wow, mixing Mormons and the Holy Trinity together TICH TICH for shame. OK,
this is a difficault question and one that will get Catholics (Especialy
Roman Catholics) going for days. It is based on the three items
1/ Father
2/ Son
and
3/ Holy Ghost
In that they are all one of the same and all exist at the same time. Messy
stuff that does look at your love for g-d to beleive and understand. Gets a
bit confusing when you start to question it as an older person, rather than
accepting it as a young child.

Better be careful, this will start a nasty thread.
