Beside all the programming stuff, please take a closer look to the
voltage regulator.
12V in automotive are extremly noisy and have spikes up to 60 volt.
Just a LDO without protection will be killed inbetween minutes.
At least a serial resistor and a Z-diode (~20V) in front of the LDO
should give you a minimum of pretection.
Or go for an LDO which is qualified for automotive usage.
