'ALL: [ADMIN]: Annual list cleanup'

Hi all,

In an effort to clean up the list subscriber database and reduce the
number of error messages seen by the wonderful folks at MIT who host this
list at no cost to us, it's time for our first annual list cleanup.  This
will probably be an annual event from now on.

It shouldn't take much of your time.  On 9/12 (at least here in the US),
the server will send a renewal message to every list subscriber.  You will
have 15 days to respond to this message to stay on the list.  If you
haven't replied within 15 days, you will be dropped and will have to
re-subscribe.  This should catch all the email accounts that are inactive,
people who are auto-deleting all list traffic rather than unsubscribing,
etc.

As I said, it should be low or no impact.  If you respond to the message
as directed and still find you've been deleted after 9/27, let me or one
of the other admins know and we'll see if we can help, but I don't expect
any major problems.  It's part of what we need to do if this list is going
to continue in its present form.

Arrrgh...  I didn't mean *THAT* message, I meant the one the list server
has now automatically sent to 2105 current list subscribers.  PLEASE stop
sending replies to the email I sent advising everyone of the process.
I'll try to be more clear in the future.

You can be as clear as you want :-) It is one of the funny things about
a list with people from all over the World. Many list members are not good
english speakers, such as myself :-) You can explain it in all detail and
you would still have people replying wrongly to the list.

It is one of the nicer and worse thing about the Net. We get all kind of
people with all kind of different knowledge and experiences. And of course
all kind of language skills ;-)

Don't get mad at it. It is inevitable.

Best regards,
Alexandre Guimaraes

Well I guess that means mine is still in the mail, as I have not received
one (apart from the one mis-sent to the list by someone else) as of sending
this email. I do not know if you can set it up to do a delayed sending, but
it may be worth trying a repeat send in the dead of night when activity on
the net is (relatively) low.

And remember, not all of us have bought the Tee Shirt!

BTW, I would be interested in how many subcribers there are now,
(2105, I'd bet :) and how many are left after the "cut".

Also, I hope the absence of a tag on the renewal message doesn't
cause anyone to "miss" it (either list-server reasons or end-user
filter reasons).  Worked great for me, though--it went straight
to my In box.

Actually, Dale, your message was perfectly clear to anyone who actually took
the trouble to *read* it.  Think of it as an intelligence test.  The bozos
too dumb (or careless or arrogant) to follow a few simple directions will
weed themselves off the PIClist.  No loss.

Don't be so cruel. Give them a chance to remain at
wonderful PICListLand. Human is weak sometimes and
for this makes stupid things from time to time.

Subject: ALL: [ADMIN]: Annual list cleanup
