did you try to use on the pc

printf( " ADC Number: %d", adcread );

that should show you the decimal value not the ascii value.

I've never heard of that chip.

If the chip has a ten bit A/D a number between 0 and 1023 is returned.
If the chip has an 8 bit A/D a number between 0 and 255 is returned.
