'16C54 vs. 16C54C in MPLAB'

I'm using MPLAB 3.12 with a PicStart Plus, firmware 1.20.00. I'm trying
to program a 16C54C. Since there isn't such a choice on the parts menu
in that version of MPLAB, I have tried 16C54 and 16C54A. In the config
bits I'm setting code protect ON, but the 16C54C's can be read back
anyway! Do I have to upgrade MPLAB to make code protect work for the
new part?
Hardware: 75mHz Pentium Win 95.
I have a 1Q99 CD-Rom that has MPLAB-IDE 4.00 on it. Is that a good
version to use if I have to upgrade, and will the PicStart Plus be
OK at the current firmware rev level? Is there a big re-learning
curve for the new version?
...grateful for any advice...

Currently only PROMATE with latest firmware from MPLAB 4.0 supports proper
programming of 16C54C.

The 16C54C does have a new code protection scheme and you should really
upgrade. However I noticed the there is no 16C54C.inc file and it is
not included in the 16C5x.inc generic file either.
(Using the 16C54B part will do the trick.)

Think you will have to burn new PS+ firmware. Can't help with the rest.
