I have a really small application in mind.  And I
was wondering how cheap and how small and
how minutely functional I could go with a pic?

Thanks

I've got a couple of REALLY minutely functional
PICs you can have cheap. Totally un-functional
they are... ;o)

Seriously now, check out the OTP 12c509, about 60c
in quantity, 1k ram.

From Digi-Key, they list an 8-pin 12C508A OTP for $1.58.  This is the
cheapest I've seen in single-piece quantities.

This only has 512K of EPROM and 25 RAM bytes with 5 I/O lines.

They also sell a 12C509A OTP for $1.63 which has 1K of program memory with
41 bytes of RAM, but still only 5 I/O lines.

pioneer standard (http://www.mypioneer.com) allows single qty purchasing...  A
12c508a is currently going for $1.02 for the PIC12C508A-04\P and $.81 for
\SM.

Disclaimer:  No, I don't work for these guys, just purchased lots of proto
stuff from them.

I meant in quantity also...

are these 12c508a 's the cheapest in quantity also?

I don't know exactly what quantity, I must generalize here,
let's say medium large...

It's funny that they can provide 41 RAM bytes in a $.60 8-pin el-cheapo
12C509, but for $6.00 they only put 36 bytes in an 18-pin 16C71 with A/D.

Quite annoying.

Also funny that the 16C711 has pretty much the exact functionality as the
C71, but has 68 bytes of RAM.  And it's cheaper.

Microchip is a little strange sometimes....

When you're talking about relatively small numbers of components that are
quite cheap, you need to start worrying about "hidden" costs like postage,
handling, and tax.  I was almost ready to buy some of the "sale" PICs from
pioneer a while ago, but by the time I added Ca tax (8%?), shipping ($6 min
for UPS, IIRC) and handing charges (about $5?), I was getting real close to
digikey's prices on any quantitiy that wasn't entirely shipping dominated.
