'[pic]: USB and Vendor ID'

Hi PICList friends,

I am trying to implement a USB interface using PIC16C765 and WinRT for USB
new version for WinNT 4.0
(http://www.bluewatersystems.com/products/devtools/usbwin40/).

I have a few questions regarding the software library that Microchip
publish on their web site
(http://www.microchip.com/10/lit/pline/picmicro/families/16c7xx/support/usbv110/index.htm).

As I understand the USB world, then if we want to develop a USB device,
then we need to get a Vendor ID from http://www.usb.org
(http://www.usb.org/developers/data/usbifapp.pdf),  but, they ask an annual
subscription of $2500 for this Vendor ID. Is there a way around it ?

Is the Vendor ID only needed in the Windows driver or it is also needed
during the enumeration process and needed by the software library that
Microchip provide?

If it does needed by the software library, could someone please point me
where ?

Thanks Chaipi

to develop a USB device for commercial use you will need a vendor id. it's a 16 bit number used at
both ends of the wire to uniquely identify each manufacturer.
the good news is that it shouldn't cost you 2500 dollars as you don't need to join the usbif.
iirc the cost to just register for a vid is around $100... there's mention of it in the faq:
http://www.usb.org/developers/usbfaq.html#3

if you are only using usb in a confined environment (i.e. you are not going to sell anything) then
you could just pick any number and use that instead, just remember that some future device may come
along and mess everything up for you.

Regards,
Simon

Sorry not sure where but I think there are "test" ID's which can be used.
Might pay to search the http://www.usb.org site a bit for it.

Thanks for the tip, Actually, it is $200 for the Vendor ID only, I
contacted them at  EraseMEadminspam_OUTspamTakeThisOuTusb.org and then sent me all the information.

   Chaipi:

Non-members can purchase a VID for $200.  Apply now; the USB-IF
   is sometimes slow.

The VID and PID (Product ID, which you choose) identify your
device to the host during enumeration; it's needed by the
Windows INF file and by your device.

It goes in the Device Descriptor.
