'[ot] Link Farms?'
2007\10\03@184127
by
Harold Hallikainen
I keep getting Google Alerts on my search terms that turn up some very
strange pages in China, like this http://wgxpqxuxfwhi.cn/1008.html . I
suspect this is just a link farm to improve web site rankings, right? Did
the sites linked to from this actually pay for this "search engine
optimization?"

This seems to be a compromised Chinese site by some spammers.
It is said that they are many compromized Chinese sites by
crackers, spammers and hackers due to lack of proper
management of the ISPs.
It is actually very dangerous to go to many Chinese websites
because of the popups, malicious plugins, malicious content.
So I will normally use Linux to go to even so-called Nasdaq
listed Chinese portals. It seems that even those sites are full
of unhealthy content...

Xiaofan,
You are a good people.
Please don't say anything related to nationality, race, male/female etc on this tech forum. This is not good.
Also that's an issue all over the world, not just China.

Add this into your search:
-site:.cn
Like this:
term1 term2 term2 -site:.cn
Of course if you're looking for a Chinese site you're out of luck.

I think you are right with the last sentence.
But PIClist is not a typical tech forum, especially with
the [OT] tags. And you will note that I am not a typical
Chinese. Guess I am out of China for too long...
Still thanks reminding me.

I found it to be useful advice.
It netted out to me as "be careful, the risks are higher at this time".
The principal concern most of us have with dealing with Chinese vendors at
this time is that we seem to be uncovering the "evil element" in the Chinese
society. The appropriate authorities are dealing with the problems. The fact
that a company or individual is Chinese does not deter me from accepting
them but I do need to be aware of the risks.
I use a lot of products of Chinese origin.
BTW, I expect there are those who find your ID "Funny NYPD" to be

Well, sorry about my name.
For my last name, you got to talk with my Grandpa's Grandpa who was dead long ago (I cannot count how many generation since then, it has been a while. I was born when my mom was 17) . When my Grandpa's Grandpa was freed as a slave after the civil war, he picked up this strong name for our whole family. And it kept bring luck to my family.
My dad gives me my First name: Funny. If anybody gets an issue with that, you can talk with him, he is still alive and strong.
I like neither of my names. However my last name does bring me luck. Some of my classmates like my last name, most of them are ok with it.
If any one want me switch back to my nick name, with some help, I can find out in the Yahoo email setting, and change it back, again. Not a problem. It will take me a while though, please let me know.
BTW, I was told I got about 1/16 of blood-relationship from mainland China. I took some class to learn that language, very interesting language and culture.

Are any police? What comes to mind is an item I saw in the paper not too
long ago about how a foreign tourist got (what I would class as)
unreasonably roughly handled for jaywalking in some US city, but I don't
think it was NY. Giving a foreigner a friendly warning was not enough
apparently.

Alan,
No, not at all, none of my family member I aware of has ever joined the police or the army.
My high school classmate did join the army, 4 boys and 1 girl I know joined the army couple of years ago, 1 boy lost a leg this year, the girl lost her eyes in Iraq last year somehow. Man, this is real life. Hard to believe it.
If this name really scares you, I better change it back to my nick name. Let me know.

Police are human. As such, some are better then others.
Aside from that, everybody has a bad day once in a while. Police, by
their profession and training, are probably on average better at
handling that then your average person, but even they will sometimes
react in a back way.
Personally, I don't think I could be a cop, I don't think I'd have the
patience to not pull my gun out way to often... :)

Hi Funny.
I'm not so muh fussed with your nic, but with your mail client (Yahoo
WebMail....). It is not conformant with the standards used in mail
syustems for tracking message threading.
As a result, your messages do not line up in response to the message you
are replying to. At the moment, I believe you are the only piclister
using such a client. It is my pet pieve....
While I know that changing your mail client may be a pain, I humbly
request that you either: change your mail client, or, alert your service
provider that their mail system is non-conformant with the mail standard
RFC2822 section 3.6.4, and request that they upgrade their system.
Thanks
Rolf

Are you saying that it's not ok for him to relate observed facts, if
they might offend someone?
I've had a lot of trouble with Chinese vendors over the last 15 years
or so, all of a similar nature. The samples are fine, but the
delivered product varies wildly.
I've had quality issues with vendors of all nationalities, but nowhere
NEAR the magnitude of the problems I've had lately with Chinese
vendors.
I don't know the reasons why this is so, but it's an observed fact,
and bears mentioning to anyone thinking of working with those vendors.
In past years, Japanese products had horrible reputations, the phrase
"jap crap" was used a lot. Obviously things have changed, and Japanese
products are usually of very high quality. About midway through this,
Taiwan became a major player in low cost manufacturing, and had much
the same curve. Now products from Taiwan are quite good. I expect
that Chinese products will follow the same curve, at their own pace.
It simply seems to be the price we pay as each society learns how to
produce high quality goods and the real costs of "low price
engineering".
Normally, I try to let James and the other moderators do the
moderating, and I think probably you should also.

David,
I think basically you are talking about business people here. That's something good to know.
I did some outsourcing too. I worked at a Truck company which makes our own engines; we were outsourcing some diesel engine manufacturing capability to mainland China. They seemed to be quite open to the new challenges and nice people.
True, they do need sharp their iron on the advanced manufacturing side. Basically without a big potential order, they won't invest on new advanced equipments. Those are truly expensive equipments. And it did take a while for them to finally capture up the quality requirement here in the USA. Small issues will take couple of days; big issues will take couple of weeks. Man, they worked hard. It is so impressive for their R&D capability.
Same thing will be happen (from suppliers to our own plant) when we release new products/design here in the USA, the initial quality will be poor for quite a while, everything looks like a disaster. It takes from couple of weeks to couple of month to rev-up and fixed all those glitches. After that three month to half a year period, you will get very robotic product from our plant. Inside, we called that continuous improvement.
Overall, on my personal experience, the businessmen from supplier (in the USA, Japan, Brazil, or in China,) are all about the same, very polite and knowledgeable. No much difference to me.
