I saw some in the garden section of our local K-mart about a year ago -
haven't looked since. Think they were about $NZ20 each. But a garden supply
store may be one option.

RS Components and Rapid Electronics have water solenoids, but they
have 1/2 inch / 15mm connections

Check out spares for your favourite washing machine. Could be cheap
if you find the right source. I found I could get Fisher & Paykel 12V
solenoids for I think under NZ$20.

Have you considered looking at lawn sprinkler valves? Or even the water
valves for a humidifier, some are metal, but there are some available in
plastic. You didn't mention what type of voltage you are looking for.
All these would be 24VAC.

I think the ones I found came from Alltronics. Their intended use was in
automotive emmissions controls.
It has been a while though.
