I want to get a cell phone that my laptop will
be able to use its modem with the same as a
land line, using the rj11 and autodial and so on.

Is this possible? I'm going to check sprint first,
anyone have any experience with a specific phone?

Thanks

I've used Sprint's service for this, but not really with the RJ11 part, since the modem is built into the cellphone.  You need a data cable that connects the phone to the laptop's serial port, then use a dial-up app that Sprint provides.  Works decently, but is slow (~9600bps).  It's been a live saver though, when I've needed to get something on a long trip.  One example was rupturing a tire in the middle of nowhere and had been planning to change tire brand/model, so I dialed-up from the side of the highway and emailed some friends and my local Audi club.  About an hour later I dialed up again, and had recommendations and info on tire-stores along my path who had that tire in stock.  Technology, baby!

However, Sprint's service and signal quality has declined to practically nil in the past year, even after changing phones as per their recommendation, and phone tests by them.  So I dumped them.  I now use T-mobile who has much better signal quality, but haven't tried their modem system yet.

Cheers,
-Neil.

Sprint PCS had a 19200 connection last I used it.  Their Vision phones
are supposed to be faster.  Never conneted POTS modem to cell phone,
always used cable from laptop to cell phone.  Serial at the time, but
hear now it's USB.... smart move.  Some also have a CF interface that
could be used with PDA's that use a CF card.  GOod luck finding an
intelligent sales rep that knows much truth about the modem aspect of
the service... they are just there to sell the equipment.  Best source
for answers is customer service after you have looked at the equipment
at least once to gather intelligent questions.

What I do when traveling is to use my Kyocera 2135 cellphone with the data cable you can buy for it. The cellphone then appears to be an AT compatible modem with a data rate of 14.4 kbps and a serial rate of 19.6 kbps. Not very fast, but with unlimited night, weekend, roaming, and long distance, it's been useful while traveling. On my old laptop, I just plug in a serial cable. On my wife's newer laptop, we use a USB to EIA232 adaptor cable. Both work fine. I just always dial my home dial-up number since long distance is free. That way I don't have to look up local access numbers all over the place. We recently went to my niece's wedding and uploaded about 200 photos to our photo gallery overnight on the cell phone. Works well for me!

BTW, on the plan I had, it was a flat $5 per month, and all modem usage was just taken off as part of my regular minutes (such as free on nights and weekends).

Cheers,
-Neil.

You guys have a cervice that's free nights & week ends? The best we have is
one hour at a reduced rate, and thats not on all packages. Using a cell as a
modem is not really practicle economically here. (South Africa) We also pay
per minute on local calls, as well as after hours.
