'[ot]: Globalstar and Iridium, a bust...'

Hello Picsters!

This is way off topic, but perhaps someone here
is a fan or has worked nearby one of these two
companies.

I noticed both have now gone under, effectively.

I was wondering what if any differences there are
between the spacecraft that each company uses to
provide their services.  Is Globalstars' technology
a generation ahead of Motorolas' ??  I know globalstar
came after Iridium, and I was just wondering if it,
globalstar, was 'better' technology, as far as the
satelites are concerned?  And if different, in technology
or approach, how is it different?

If you can provide a link to this type of info, that
would be appreciated too, thanks.

I was a big fan of this idea of satelite based telephony,
or communication.  But it just goes to show what
my (stock) picking ability is...Although, I didn't have
any shares, luckily.

Iridium sure was a steal of a pickup after bancrupty
though.  A 7 Bil asset picked up for 25 mil.  Now
that's doing some shopping by someone!!!  Wonder
if Globalstar will be some lucky shoppers pickup??

Thanks...

The little reading I have done about Global Star indicates that it is not
set up for true world coverage at this time.  You can see a map of their
coverage at http://www.globalstar.com/pages/coverage.html.  In a sailing
article I read, there was a statement about coverage being limited to 200
miles off shore.  I had looked at it as a means of global communication
while sailing on my sailboat.  Something about my kids wanting to be able
and reach out and touch me.  At this point I am not sure that it covers
enough for my purpose.

It was in the 'news' here that they, globalstar have suspended
paying their debts, --a step or two before normal bancruptcy, usually.

Actually, Iridium has come back alive.  Another company has bought the
remains.  Can't remember who they were.

No, the US military is just a long term customer.
See the transcript of the conference call for all the details.
