t = R * C seconds, where R is in ohms and C in Farads.

This is the time for a capacitor to charge or discharge through a resistor
by approx 63% (actually 1/e). It applies equally to parallel and series
arrangements.

As an approximation the capacitor will charge or discharge to around 1% of
it's eventual value, i.e fully charged or discharged, in five times the time
constant.

These numbers are theoretical but other factors, e.g. leakage in the
capacitor, will affect the actual result. In general the calculation becomes
less of a match for real-world circuits for higher values of t.
