Subject: Gameboy camera to P(i)C interface???
Russell,
Try searching the Web for Gameboy Hacking. There are
several pages
dedicated to writing games for the GB and GB Colour. I
have seen
information about the camera, including internal
pictures. I believe
that the 'camera' chiip used is a Mitsubishi Artifical
retina device
128 x 128 pixels. The device does several forms of
image processing
'on-chip' hence the name artificial retina. Details can
be found on
Mitsubishi's site.

Check out the Brookes Sensor page where this link came
from,

Hope this gives you some pointers.
Dave.

The Gameboy video cameras are being specialed here for $NZ30
(about $US15)
These are a moderately low resolution CMOS b&W video unit
with extra
hardware to work in the gameboy.
Details for PC interfacing these to a PC using a gameboy are
available on
the net.
It should be possible to talk to these directly but I can't
find technical
details from anyone who has done it.
Is anyone aware of an interface directly to these cameras -
using a PIC or
otherwise.

Following site has tech details about the artificial retina
chip - ARC:
http://www.lh.co.nz/hardware/ar/techinfo.htm
[NZ, Christchurch - you know these guys, Jinxman?? Just done
the street]
128x128 pixels, 256 grey levels, produces up to 30 frames/sec
using a 500 khz clock. Well within the frequency range of a
PIC, but you need some place to store 128x128=16,384 bytes
of data/frame. Maybe one of the 17Cxxx PICs with direct
memory addressing for frame store.
The ARC has some interesting real-time capability - negative
images, edge enhancement, gain control, variable exposure times,
2-D edge extraction.
Maybe the new scenix chip could handle secondary processing for
a minibot or other app.

Of course. Everyone in NZ knows everyone else. The 30,000,000
sheep are the headache. Nothing worse than forgetting your date's
name. E aroha io
There's more info on the GB camera here, a mirror of another
Mitsubishi site I've seen
http://www.lh.co.nz/hardware/
I picked up two of those cameras earlier in the year when they
were on special and got as far as opening one up, "hmmm, t'riffic"
and putting it back together. I could use a diversion like a camera
i/f about now

I've used them with pic. The signal is analog so
you need an A/D

I'm beginning to think that "Rip-off Britain" really does exist and it's not
just the price of cars and CD's. A Colour Gameboy is 60 quid say $80 though
if you shop around I believe you can get it a little bit cheaper. Lowest
Price I have heard recently is 56 quid. Monochrome Gameboy is 30 quid.
Emigration is looking increasingly attractive ;-)

Check on eBay, the online auction. I saw a gameboy with camera go for about
US$28 a couple of months back. http://www.ebay.com and search for "gameboy".
