' AC power driven LEDs have been commercialized by other manufacturers and
these types of devices can be easily downsized due to their simplified
drive circuits. However, when compared with DC power driven LEDs,
efficiency problems are often noticed when the brightness is low or
approaching zero.



Citizen Electronics’ new products can be driven directly by an AC power
supply by adopting an innovative technique called SCD (Selective Current
Diversion technique) in the LED drive circuits. Accordingly, the modules do
not need a DC power circuit, and downsizing and slimming of the products
has been accomplished successfully. In addition, their zero lighting time
has been reduced compared with that of existing AC driven LEDs and a huge
increase in efficiency has also been achieved.



Downlights or spotlights are easily realised just by incorporating heat
sinks and covers into the LMC10B series. The product line-up is expected to
expanded with linear modules such as straight-tube fluorescent light types.
By providing ‘easier-to-use’ LED modules, Citizen hopes to contribute to a
reduction in the time and cost of development for LED lighting equipment
makers.

Luminous flux: 1000 lm

Colour temperatures: 3000 K and 4000 K

European CE marked



Versions for 100 VAC (Japan) and 110-120 VAC (North America) are in
development. Mass production is scheduled to start in April 2011 but is
likely to be delayed owing to the recent catastrophes in Japan. '

I'm wondering if Citizen have been "rolled" by "Once innovation" 's
SCD technology.

Looks somewhat like a valley circuit jn operation.
Exactly what it does is unclear from Citizens page, and also from Once's

One of Once's luminaries (pun noted only subsequently) appears to be
an ex patent attorney. Can be handy.

What they are claiming is good enough, but it's not obvious at a
glance that's it's stunning.

Overall l/W is poor (46 l/W end to end claimed) and CRI (Colour
rendering index) of 80 is very low for the serious domestic or
commercial markets.
I noted an LED yesterday with CRI of 94 claimed (best I've seen) for a
medium white part (about 4500 degrees CCT from memory). .
Can't recall which it was but possibly a Cree "X-lamp" product.

AC operation with electronics included is OK as long as the prices is
stunning but odds are that the integration attracts a premium price.
This is heading towards being a commodity market very rapidly and
fancy clever products are also going to have to be cost compelling.

I've just ordered a few thousand lumens of LEDs from Deal Extreme (my
1st purchase from them). will be interesting to see how it goes.
Their  Cree XP-G (a very nice LED)  pricing was perhaps slightly above
Digikey's but the ability to mix with a large range of other stuff and
free shipping at any total price  made it worthwhile.

Ordered some boost smps modules which are priced at about unbelievably
low levels. If they work as well as claimed i'll rave about them in
detail here in due course.
