Want to make or buy a solid state digital audio recorder, with the
capability of recording CD quality audio and lower rates.

44.1kHz * 2 channels * 16 bits * 3600 sec = 5,080,320,000 bits =
635,040,000 8-bit bytes of storage required.

Only need basic controls: rec, play, stop, ff, rew; display desirable
but not crucial.

Has such a kit ever been released? I guess the storage device would
ideally be a USB memory stick these days.

Otherwise I'll have to buy whatever Argos keep in stock...

Thanks,
Matt

You may want to look into using an older used pocket PC, available on
ebay 25-50 dollars. They have a built in wave device that may be able
to do what you are looking for, plus accept a CF or SD storage card
that you can record onto.

Digital Dictaphones have been around for a while.  I even saw one advertised
as a "as seen on TV" product, that was a bit odd.  I'm not sure why the
masses need Dictaphones.  (Huh, Outlook capitalises Dictaphone, must be a
brand name)

Many MP3 players record audio as well, but they may not be quite what you
want.  You can't record for a couple of minutes, rewind 30 seconds and start
recording again.

Googling ''voice recorder" with portable, personal or digital might turn up
something.
