I admit that I would like to see Al Gore and other "Global Warming"
feeders be proven wrong.

For what it's worth, here in Northern Ohio, and much of the states too,
we are having one of our colder winters in recent times, maybe 20 years.
Perhaps cloud seeding and other weather modifying actions should be
outlawed. I understand several Southwestern states do it including
Nevada, and China as a pollution fighter.

Hi Gus,

Because a fellow admin started this thread I'll let him police it, but
my interpretation of the rules
(http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/piclist) strongly suggests that
bringing up Al Gore is not allowed in a Global Warming thread, for
obvious reasons. It is something worth remembering, since we have been
down this road before, and should know what triggers to avoid in order
to keep discussion on a technical footing.

Thanks,

Bob

I often see aircraft flying high releasing a white substance that spreads
out like a cloud cover.  It seems to me that it would reflect back the
sunlight and change the wind patters (i.e.change air pressures).  Would this
not affect the weather?  I see aircraft doing this quite often; usually on a
sunny day.  I have been curious about it but I never see anything written in
the media about it.

There have been studies and many believe that the contrails (water vapor
condensing behind a jet aircraft) do effect weather, but this is not
published by mainstream media. Photos from space 9/11 era seem to
confirm this, where the USA atmosphere was much clearer. There are
others that believe chemtrails (chemicals sprayed from high flying
aircraft) are a reality. Photos show different colors, density, shape,
etc. I'm not even going to try to explain substances, reasons, etc. Here
in Northern Ohio, it has been many years since I have seen a clear night
with bright shining stars. :(

The contrails were mentioned in a PBS program I watched many moons ago,
allegedly they indeed have an effect on the weather:

"[...]Another study that took advantage of the grounding gave striking
evidence of what contrails can do. David Travis of the University of
Wisconsin-Whitewater and two colleagues measured the difference, over those
three contrail-free days, between the highest daytime temperature and the
lowest nighttime temperature across the continental U.S. They compared those
data with the average range in day-night temperatures for the period
1971-2000, again across the contiguous 48 states. Travis's team discovered
that from roughly midday September 11 to midday September 14, the days had
become warmer and the nights cooler, with the overall range greater by about
two degrees Fahrenheit.

These results suggest that contrails can suppress both daytime highs (by
reflecting sunlight back to space) and nighttime lows (by trapping radiated
heat). That is, they can be both cooling and warming clouds. But what is the
net effect? Do they cool more than they warm, or vice versa? "Well, the
assumption is a net warming," Travis says, "but there is a lot of argument
still going on about how much of a warming effect they produce." "

Thank you for the reply.  I will try to research it keyword chemtrails.

For what it's worth:

When I was a USAF Weather Forecaster in the late '60s there was a
reportable cirrus cloud type defined as "cirro-stratus formed by the
spreading out of contrails"! I do not remember the cloud type number but
I believe it was a type recognized by the World Meteorological Society
(WMO) and I remember our weather observers using the type often. At the
time I was stationed in Pleiku, Vietnam.

BTW:Contrails are caused by the water vapor exhausted by airplane
engines, both jet and piston types, turning into ice crystals in the
sub-zero temperature. One only needs look at films of B-17 bombers
flying at 20+ thousand feet during WWII to see that this is not a a new
phenomenon.

I heard it is about 1000 year /cycle from a history reports.
Maybe the modern industry changed the frequency?

Actual I have noticed in recent years less contrails for whatever
reason, I suspect improved engine technology with better fuel economy
and less pollution.
