Are there any alternatives to the PING sensor provided by parallax, to be used for long range object detection and distance measuring ?
Ranges of interest : 3 meters and up .
Regards

Hi Wissam;
Leica makes a laser rnge measuring unit. The model I bought has a range to about 30 ft. It was a few hundred $$, and had no serial output.
So I had to hack the LCD display lines -pretty intense- and the keypad to make my SX control it.
Cheers,
Peter (pjv)

There are a number of other sonar transducers (roll-your-own sensor) and ready-to-go boards that provide distance up to the 10 meter range. Do a search online and you'll turn up all sorts of circuits and ready-to-purchase boards. Cheaper than a laser finder (but a wholly other capability and concept).
