Hi Darrel

One of my customers heard from Future that the 16C71 is going to be
obsoleted soon. He asked us so I called the so-cal Microchip office.  The
person who answered the phone said it is not on any lists she had so we
should consider it still in production.  Digi-key told me the same thing.

Now my customer is worried and concerned.  Is there some way you can find
out the true story here for us?  We would appreciate the right answer.

By the way, the person at Future suggested using the 16C711 as it is
cheaper.  I noticed that it has twice the program memory and also twice the
ram.  Do you know by any chance if '71 programs will drop right in and run
or do they need to be massaged around a bit to account for the larger
amounts of memory?

Thanks for any help you can offer!

Best regards,

Ooops.  That was meant to go to Darrel Johansen.  Not the piclist.

Plus the '71 has the same program memory as the '710.  It's the '715 that
has twice the memory.

Anyway, sorry to bug everyone with an erroneously sent message.

No it doesn't. The 710 is 512 words and the 71 is 1024 words. The replacement
for the 71 is the 711 and it is the to the 71 as say a 16C74A is to a '74. A
direct replacement with the PWRTE bit inverted, uneraseable code protection
and brownout added.

No, the 16C715  has four times the memory and parity bits.

Tom,

Last week in the MChip seminar they said that this and other popular parts
will be replaced by its (slowly..) appearing flash versions. Also, said that
in one year they'll be producing a cheaper (with a new fab process) version
of the 16F84.

BTW, the seminar was a big bad joke. I don't understand where they want to
go in trying to teach analog filtering theory (in a *PIC* seminar) in three
hours... And showing the poor FilterLab software to engineers with years of
experience on designing all kind of filters...
It seems that they need to sell their new OpAmps...
I guess how many of the 150 assistants will return to a Microchip seminar
next time.

Regards,

S.-

Tom,

I have a customer whose code is set up to use either chip.  Only the fuses were
different, as I recall.

Fine except for one thing.

Due to the fact that what Microchip calls Flash is more like what everyone
else calls EEPROM Microchip's flash parts take a long time to program. It will
be very tedious when I have a batch of ten to do.

Yep, that is what I tried to say earlier. The 711 is directly upward
compatible with the 16C71 except for the config word changes I mentioned
before. (BODEN added, PWRTE reversed, code protection uneraseable and more
secure.)

Unfortunately I didn't read yours until after I had posted mine.

Thanks to all those who responded both to the list and directly to me about
my mis directed email that went to the list rather than to an individual.

As usual, the list proves itself to be *The Source* for PIC chip
information. Thanks again!
