As the times involved are somewhat short, an alternative to using a
very fast clock to time the delay is to use an analogue method, e.g.
using the received signal to gate the charging of a capacitor, giving
a voltage proportional to the delay.
There is another method that can be used for measuring shorter
distances - fire the laser at an angle, and use a lens & linear CCD to
determine the distance by looking at the linear position of the spot.
This method is used for ride-height sensing in motor racing.
