'[PICLIST] Editor recommendations please'

I need an editor, for .asm files, that will allow me to move single
character columns around. What would really be great is a feature that
would convert a line of characters into a column. Any recommendations?

Thanks

John

if you are running linux, I use nedit  (free)
under windows, I used to use brief (by an outfit called underware) current
costs???

both of these support column cut and paste.

You might have a look at http://www.vedit.com/.  Hope this helps.

Other than severe embarrassment if anyone sees the splash screen?  8-)

I used to use one (long, looooong ago) called Electric Pencil.  it was an
old DOS program that would allow you to select (with arrow keys) a block
of text, any number of lines/columns, and manipulate it.  Unfortunately,
that was its ONLY redeeming feature.

It does columnar stuff like I think you wanted.

Attached is a file that includes syntax hilighting for pic assembly. I
wouldn't just dump it in, since the latest version of ultraedit probably
comes with a wordfile with other cool features. Rather, edit yours and
paste in the pic-specific stuff from mine.

Cheers,

Bob

Microsoft word will allow you to select and deal with columns of
characters, just hold down the alt key before and during you start
selecting the text you want.  Choose a fixed width font and have fun.

Excel will transpose columns and rows for you, but it's a little
trickier.

I imagine vi or emacs probably would do what you want as well.

Try MultiEdit - http://www.multiedit.com

Line, stream and columnar marking. DOS and Windows versions. Has a macro
language that easily do what you want.

You may try TestPad by Helios Software solutions
       http://www.textpad.com/

This editor allows you to form a block of columns and move it. An other feature I like you can
visualize the hex content of binary files.

Hmm.  Anybody have a set (sets?) of emacs libraries that will turn emacs
into a reasonable IDE for any of our favorite micros?  You know - appropriate
syntax highlighting, definitions for "compile", interface to programmers,
etc.

Thanks

Hi,

On Windows, we use Codewright. Not sure about conversion from lines to
columns but it does pretty much everything else, including "box" moves of
columns, user-configurable function completion prompting (not much use for
asm, admittedly), syntax highlighting, integration with version control
tools, auto formatting....blah blah blah

Dan
