'[PICLIST] [PIC] PICALL PIC Programmer'

I have an EPIC Pocket programmer and I want to program 16C771 20 pin dip
PICs.  To do this I will have to update my software from v2.11 :-( and
buy a 8/18/20 Zif connector, total $45 before I pay shipping or tax!

Consequently, I'm looking for a new programmer that will ideally program
the 16C771SP and the 16F873SP.  I'm considering the 'PICALL PIC
Programmer' which I can get from
www.electronics123.com/amazon/default.htm
<http://www.electronics123.com/amazon/default.htm%20for%20$70>  for $70
ish.

Any comments on this purchase?  I'm happy to solder etc but I won't walk
a mile to save a penny.

Huh?? Why not simply download the latest code from their web site -- it's
called "beta", but it's all I've ever used.  By the time I started using
my EPIC+ it was a year or two after I'd bought it, lost the floppy and
damned if I'll send them money for another one.

As for the ZIF adapter, it took me all of $15 worth of parts from Digi-Key
and half an hour to make my own.  All you need is a 10-pin connector,
short hunk of ribbon cable, a little perfboard, ZIF socket and a soldering
iron.  I put a 40-pin ZIF on the board too, for 28 & 40 pin PICs.  There's
certainly nothing at all magic about MELabs' adapters.

All in all it's only a hundred yards or so for the penny...  8-)
