'[PICLIST] [OT]LCD for speed/odometer display.'

Hello.
I want to add a speedometer and perhaps an odometer to my Roller
Blades. But I don't recall seeing a hobby source for a short length
relativly tall display for showing speed. It has to be big enough to
read easily from almost six feet away. I am thinking of something like
the display from a hand held multimeter.
Does anyone know where I can get those in single quantities,
inexpensivly?
Thank you.

How about the whole Multimeter. Many of them have a frequency display for
your speed(roll your own multiply/divide) and a DAC readout to the DC
display for the integrated value.

Hi Russell, most department stores and all bicycle
stores sell bike computers, about wristwatch sized
or a bit larger with a LCD digital speedo display.
I don't know if it's big enough, some are better
than others, but that's where i'd look first, they
are cheap and have odometer, trip speed averages,
etc. :o)

Yeah, vaguely...

Yeah, I did one that was really cool... But between design and
manufacturing, the client ran out of money and/or interest, so
it's never been made available to the public.
Solved the "display must be readable from 6 feet" problem by
making the skate transmit wirelessly to a wristwatch display...
Which also solved the "I can't keep my balance or see where I'm
going if I'm staring intently at the toe of my skate" problem.
If you don't mind staring at your toes, there's at least one
skate speedo/odometer already on the market that works that way.
I don't recall the manufacturer's name offhand.

Dumb question:
Since your feet do not remain in continuous contact with the ground while
skating, how can you measure speed/distance?

Bob,
You measure the MAX velocity during the past second or so
and assume that THAT is the current actual velocity.
Then you accumulate the sum of the one second interval
calculated distances and you have your total distance
traveled.

Ah... a light goes on.
This makes a lot of sense, but it wouldn't always work the way I often skate
at a rink....
I'll skate along on one foot for perhaps 5 to 10 seconds at a time.
But for exercise skating it would work great!
