Hi, can anyone tell me what is the maximum length of cable I can use on a
usb webcam? I need to put the webcam about 50 feet away from my pc but
haven't been able to find anyone here in Hobart who can answer the question.
Obligatory pic content:- the telescope the webcam will be attached to will
be driven by pic-controlled steppers.

Cheers, Ken,

One standard cable is limited to 5 meters. To reach farther you will need
hubs.

usb is a pain... it is really designed as a desk top connection not as a
local area network device. The limit per cable is 5 meters or about 15'. You
can go through a hub and use another 5 meter cable.... in fact according to
the spec you can have up to 5 hub like devices ( not sure if the root hub
counts as one device ) The cameras draw the max load of 500ma and I think
this is part of the problem... there would be a significant drop in the
supply with a 50' cable, but each hub you go through repowers the supply
line. There are also specs for signal delay, but going through a hub can
only add delay. If you feel like experimenting, I would buy a cheap usb
cable and try spicing in some cable in between the connectors... you can
check the supply voltage at the far end with your camera load.... you may
have to provide a supply at the far end. This gets a little tricky, because
the supply is controlled through the usb cable (5 volts gets switched on/off
and has overcurrent detection etc built in.). Good luck

POWERED HUBS will supply up to 500mA, but unpowered hubs will not.
