Hi all,

I started receiving a few spams to my mailbox, but then it keeps growing
like cancer and now I have to spend considerable efford everyday to sort
them out from the regular mails, I think, very soon I'll need to discard the
mailbox and start a new one, it is really very annoying! I don't want just
to reply them and ask them to remove me from the lists, since I don't trust
these people, in so doing I'll simply give them clearer picture of who I am
and my exact Email address. Any suggestion of what I can do to remove the
"cancer"?

Thanks.

John

Well...By law they are supposed to remove you from their lists if you tell
them, however this could be a double edged sword.  If you reply, then they
know that you actually read your mail, however either way they know that
e-mail address is a valid account since they won't receive a bounce message.
About half the time, any reply you make will bounce back to you since they
often use a fake return address.  They tend to rely on using so-called
"fresh" addresses so over time the junk mail should basically dry up.  SPAM
is just part of the game and it is almost impossible to avoid.  Any time you
sign up for anything and supply an address, you can pretty much count on a
flood of SPAM to quickly follow.

First off, get rid of hotmail and get a REAL email address (even if it happens
to be AOL, YUK!).  Hotmail is a known spamtrap.

Hello John

If you use the Outlook Express, you can create a rule to exclude the
messages from these spam address in the server. (Menu Tools -> Rules ->
Mail).
If you use the site service, i think there is an option to exclude messages
from selecteds address.

Whenever I sign up for something that doesn't send me a password I use
spam_OUTaTakeThisOuTspama.net for my email address. I still get spam though, so I block out
anything that was BCC sent to me. I just put in a script to make sure
that my email address is in the To or CC.

Hi John,
There are three steps that you can take:  First, stop using
HotMail ... I don't know if they sell address lists, but almost
every HotMail user complains about the quantity of spam.  Second,
if you make ANY posts to usenet be sure to spam protect your
email address.  If you want people to be able to contact you
directly, then spell out your address: john at isp dot com,
otherwise just use an invalid address.  Third, checkout one
of the anti-spam sites such as http://spamcop.net/

Good luck,
  -Nick T.

This is the method I use, too. I finally realized that "you can not stop it; you can only hope to contain it". Like Kyle, I run a filter that sends the item straight to the Deleted Items if my address isn't in the To: or CC: box. You have to filter lists (like Piclist) and other mass mailings you want first, though. I still briefly scan the messages before permanently deleting them to make sure nothing legit is in there (rarely happens anymore), but they are a lot less upsetting, grouped together in the trash bin. :-) In the six months or so that I've had this filter, not one spam message has gotten through.

You say "By law they are supposed to remove you".  Big deal!  By law, they are
not even suppose to send it to me in the first place since I live in Washington
state.  Doesn't stop them.

I have a hotmail account, yet have not ever received spam at it.
????????

Until recently I used to put a phony mail address like .....meKILLspamspam.....dummy.net
when filling in forms but now I use a method suggested by someone
on the list last time spam came up - if you see the web author's
contact address, use that

Very infrequently I have spam through Clear, but I've found that after
one or two from the same person there's no more. Probably just
angling for any replies to confirm live addresses. Of course you
know the worst thing to do is ask them to stop

Ouch! Just telling it like it is.  Actually some(very few) of the companys
seem to comply with this (believe it or not). Most, of course, do not.  I've
also noticed that now spam is starting to trickle in from foreign countries.
I guess this helps them to circumvent any applicable law.  BTW since most of
your spam would be coming from another state, Washington state law would not
apply.  Federal law would be the controlling factor since it is involving
interstate commerce.
