for those that have been following the various threads on an open source
development project for pics and the development of a networking
protocol stack I am happy to announce that last night i registered
openpic.com, openpic.net, and openpic.org. the machine that it will be
hosted on is operated by my brother who works at an ISP and has agreed
to host it for us for free. It should be a pretty high availability
server in that it's a freebsd machine (PIII-450) on a T3 with a T1 for
backup. It will be using the Apache web server and I probably will be
setting up a mailing list and if necessary a cvs server... Crap time to
go eat.. more details soon.. It'll probably have some type of content
and at least a domain name lookup in the next day or so. If you want to
help send me an email at spam_OUTmdhopkinTakeThisOuTspamunity.ncsu.edu..

               Thanks,

I hate to be the party pooper, but didn't we just have a thread
a few weeks ago citing examples where Mchp was cracking down
on names with 'pic' inserted therein??? Trademark infrigment,
blah/blah ...

OTOH, there *is* piclist.

Hey in the domain name OpenPic the "Pic" stands for "Programable
Interfacing Controller" it's just an acronym  besides I quote their web
page

Hopefully, all will be ok. No doubt Mchp has not "trademarked"
OpenPic, but AFAIrecall, someone else got in trouble recently by
having "PIC" or "pic" inserted in one of their product names. I
think that was a programmer in direct competition with Mchp's
own h.w. Hopefully, they won't see openpic as a threat to their
s.w. business.

[Note - I am not a lawyer, nor do I habitually associate nor play
golf with any - but I figured it was worth mentioning this].
=======

Interesting, as indicated above, they have trademarked "In-Circuit
Serial Programming". I wonder if they have patented it, too? There
are something like 40,000 s.w. patents granted each year. I believe
IBM actually patented the do-loop once. PAtent office is apparently
full of people who are clueless as to "prior art".

Actually, I would say that the patent office is full of people who are
"clueless" period.  At least when it comes to common sense.

JFTHOI, I went to google.com and did a search on openpic. There
were dozens of references to an OpenPIC standard for multiprocessing
on PCs that was developed by Cyrix and AMD about 1995. It looks
like they have since abandoned the idea. Wasn't clear if they had
a trademark on the name.

no results found on the US trademark electronic search system

I tested it and found that microchip does indeed have picmicro
trademarked as well as picstart and a few others.. no openpic found
though.. :)

If it matters at all to Mchp in this particular case, I think
the important thing is if they have "pic" trademarked, viz-a-viz
it's appearing "inside" other words related to the pic micro.
Probably the best thing is for you to make at least a cursory
examination of the trademark laws. Otherwise, it's all just
wheel-spinning.

I looked for PIC they didn't have it trademarked it appears there are
several "pic"'s trademarked but my favorite is the dead one from Pig
Improved Company in the UK.. gotta love that.. beyond that..

SURELOCK
FILTERLAB
M
MICROID
MIGRATABLE MEMORY
PICDSC
MPLAB
WHAT'SON
PICMICRO
GENSCALE
DICE
BUSYFAMILY
K
THE EMBEDDED CONTROL SOLUTIONS COMPANY
ACUITY RESIZING
SEEVAL
TRUE GAUGE
PICSEE
TRUEGAUGE
PRO MATE
PICMASTER
PICSTART
ACUITY
GENESIS
MICROCHIP
ENVOY
NARRATOR
are all live trademarks of some type.

it's interesting that Microchip claims they have a trademark on keeloq
but the search site I went to states that keeloq is registered to
Nanoteq Limited Company which makes car alarms in South Africa.. and
they've been using it since 1992 and got the trademark in 1995..
interesting..

It's real easy my friend. The company was "Pig Improvement Company." They did
animal sperm banks, artifical insemination. Check it out:

Anyways, if you want to search for trademarks, check out:

We might have to change the name to something without PIC in it.

Like 'Special Community of United Microcontroller Developers
Organized Group'.
Could make for a good acronym.

It earned me a few grand one time though.  I had to not allocate memory in a
sequential fashion in a particular market (can you believe that _sequentially_
listing detected devices was a claim??).  The Keeloq stuff infringed on the
patent.  So my customer paid me to remove the infringement.

Can't complain too loudly <G>

Yes, sometimes they are morons.  I used to work for an ex-examiner.

Where do you think Microchip got the Keeloq code?  They bought them out and as I
recall transplanted a few SA guys to AZ.

OK the domain now has a lookup and some preliminary pages.. I think this
might be a little too far OT to be on this list and a new mailing list
is being set up (the software should be installed sometime today)

I do have some pages on there.. not much a few data sheets on various
ethernet chip sets as well as some on some NV RAM..

any suggestions for what to call the mailing list.. I
don't want
another piclist@ maybe RemoveMEdiscussionsspamTakeThisOuTopenpic.com?? someone email me and
tell me what to call this list :)
