What's what ? Peltier ? It's a thermoelectric device that, when
you pass a current through, will develop a hot side and a cold
side. You can get them in a range of wattages and physical
sizes. The job I was wanting one for was to make a small
portable refrigerator for a friend to keep her make-up samples
cool. She tells me make-up changes quite dramatically when
it's stored too warmly, and doesn't look good when demonstrating
to the punters

Some of those are ones that need a driver IC adding (so be
warned about catalogue descriptions). But when you're getting
an order from o'seas it's so tempting to cough up another $10
for a few bits you'd probably never normally buy. They seem to
be good displays though, and well-packaged in steel cases
with acrylic faceplates so it's worth it. They have jumbo chars
too, not the ordinary 3-4mm. Similar to the last ones I got from
Oatley, which were surplus Fedex weighing terminals. I also
got a bag of miniature multiplexed12-digit 7-seg calculator
displays, not bad - 10 for $2 (1973 date stamp !!!)

Are these actually make-up chillers ?

We had a look around at the time in NZ and Australia and
didn't find anything suitable (right power and voltage) much
under NZ$250. Besides that, she wanted something the
Queen Mum would use, not from the Al Bundy beer'n'fish
range. Oatley had cheap Peltiers, (I think around 6W or 10W
for AUS$30 but I can't find the catalogue for that time), it was
worth a go making a "nice" one from the ground up

Well, I have one of these coolers...

I'm in the US, and I got it a couple of years ago.

It was around 50-60 usd then, and it's from coleman.

And it's about the size of a 8 or ten cola cans on the bottom
and it's high enough to put a bottle of wine inside.  just for an
image of the size...

it's white, with all mechanics in the lid, so I think it's a
peltier junction type of thing, it has a small fan and it is
claimed to give a differential cooling of -40f from whatever
the outside air temp is
runs on 12v car cigarette lighter plug, or home adapter...

AND if you turn the plug around, it will warm your soup.

so, this is what makes me think it's a peltier type thing..

check around online,
I bet you can find one...

Back to the subject line -

Vasile has kindly sent me a pdf from Circuit Cellar which describes
how to make a Laser Billboard

http://www.circuitcellar.com/pastissues/Indexcontents.htm

pdf (225kB) and zipped code (50kB) available under Sept 1997

General  web search for Laser Billboard brings up a few other pages
