'[PIC} A Real Simple Question?'

Why, without starting a flame war, do I fail to get few or no answers to my
question? I am new to PIC's and micro although I have been reading your list
(and others which are related) for about 4 years.

My questions may seem to be "Stupid" to most of you but to a beginner (yes,
like me) they are relavent. I am sure most of you have been where I am
sometime in your careers? There was a learnibg curve for all of you I am
sure? So, wanting to learn about the PIC Micros I subscribed to this list to
learn something.

I actually believe that my questions are about as valid as the "Can you run a
PIC off RF". or some of the others I've seen posted.

Thanks to those (very) few who have cared to answer my questions regardless
of their novice nature.

Ed

BTW, Ignorance is forever, Stupidity can be fixed.

I guess no-one has to answer any questions, but perhaps others may have
felt that your problem was being dealt with and did not merit any
further response.

you have hit upon something that is occuring on the internet...

there is a form of hatred or hostility that is growing amoung,
(some) people on the internet, where they will go out of their
way to explain 'why' your question is somehow wrong, instead of
just answering it....

I don't understand this either, it's some form of snobbery, or hatred,
or self loathing, or just meanness...I don't know

It's definitely aggressive though, and growing....
and unnecessary

my guess is that most of these types are died in the wool university
leftist types who see their socialist and environmentalist lies being
exposed by the very fact that the sky isn't falling and the world
hasn't yet collapsed in on itself --- these people must be terribly
unhappy and terrified
--but who really cares?

Out of curiosity I looked back through the last month's activity. This is
your sixth post looking for info. Your questions were not of the nature I
could answer. In fact, it looks like you are coming along nicely with your
efforts. I think it was asking a bit much to ask someone to take the time to
work through code that you found somewhere on the net. That would be pretty
time consuming for me. Usually disapproval is met with silence rather than
criticism. I cannot do better (or as well) as the answers you have recieved
here.

I have found the books by Myke Predko and those published by Square One to
be a lot of help to me to get started in a more orderly manner.

I am off on a Linux tangent at this time so I am struggling also!

Hang in there, nobody is angry!

And the mail archives are older than that

Looking at your posts I don't believe you've been ignored. One had
a dozen replies, all had at least one reply with an answer relevant
to the question

Many of your original posts (except "Which Basic Compiler to
Purchase?" - answered and "16F877 Blink An LED Does Not
Work [Again}" - answered) started with Re: ???? When I see Re:
in a subject then I take this to be a reply to a question, not a
question, which I assume means someone is already dealing
with it

WRT to the PIClist I couldn't disagree more. Compared to some
groups it's polite, (sometimes not so-) subtley humourous, well-
mannered and runs itself pretty well without too much whistle-
blowing by moderators. Perhaps once a year someone goes
berko and gets themselves thrown off, which is nothing when you
see the kind of crap (spamming, viruses, flaming, language,
threats, prejudices.........) that passes for "interaction" in other
forums

(Was that OK Dale ? You know where to send the cheque)

It may be simply that the questions you posed regarding your LED
blinker were straightforward and, having been answered already by
one person, others did not feel they could contribute further by
chiming in.

Have you tried stepping through the program using MPLAB's
simulator?  Using the simulator it should be fairly
straightforward to find out where the program's "going off into
the weeds".

One small thing, keep an eye on your topic tags (see above) :-)

If I'm too busy to read the topics I subscribe to (I don't get OT at all),
first ones which get deleted are ones with no topic tag, then EE, then PIC
(on a really bad day!).  My simple search would delete one with [PIC}
instead of [PIC]: as having no topic tag, there may be others who could
miss it for the same reason.

That may be one of the reasons you haven't had as many replies as you would
like, or it may not...

If you FAIL to get FEW or NO answers to (your) questions,
your in good shape, right?
Perhaps English is not your first language.
If you get FEW or NO answers, you have a problem.
Or perhaps you have the same problem in programming... syntax.

{Quote hidden}

I believe I am a PIC professional.
I have posted several questions on the details of the newer PICs
with NO response.  (I later answered my own question or problem
and STILL had no response!)

Getting "few or no responses" is not necessarily an indication of
your "novice nature"!  No one OWES you a response.  Get over it.

Nah - that was no typo - that was simulated stupidity. If you doubt it, look
at the post and decide what other point it had apart from the "typo" :-)

(I have enough real stupidity but that was the only way I could think of to
let it show in a 1 line post).

And you think you have problems grasshopper.
I can't even get a decent flame war started anymore when I try:-).
(Mutterings about the stupidity of using protection diodes during program
operation were manfully (amd ppossibly womanfully as well) ignored by all.)

> I am new to PIC's and micro although I have been reading your list

Responses vary immensely. Depends on who is reading what at the time and
whether they feel they can add anything useful. I just looked at your prior
posts and see that all are the sort I leave to the real PIC experts. Ask
questions about electronics in general and you'll have Peter, Roman, Jinx,
Vasile and more (even me) making your life miserable and/or interesting.

The fact that a subject like RF powering gets more mileage is just
happenstance - no coment on the quality of your questions, none of which
seemed especially stupid :-).

Just keep on asking. Sometimes you'll be buried in answers.

And if you find a decent way to reliably start a flame war please let me
know. It's much too quiet here at the moment :-)

Hi-

The learning curve on this is pretty severe.  Have you looked through
the http://www.piclist.com resources? -- lots of good stuff.  You need to start
with the simplest of all programs, which you have done.  Unfortunately,
it's a bit of a moving target.  When I started a couple of years ago,
almost everything was done with the 16F84, so it was a little easier.
Now we have several competing series which are subtly different (628,
87x, not to mention the 18Fs), and require close reasing of the
datasheet (and usually other datasheets in the same family).
Unfortunately, you have to master: the computer language, the hardware
design, the software, the programmer, the programmer software, etc etc,
and they all have to work to get the blinking light.

One main suggestion is to get a prebuilt binary and stuff that into your
hardware -- that should get the hardware debugged.  Then you can
gradually modify the code to learn the system.

Good luck -- keep plugging, this is supposed to be fun!

David
