Yes, that was strange, didn't get any of those reports myself, only saw the
messages on the microchip forum.

Yes, and it also gives a dose of clues to an as yet unannounced chip, the
PIC24FJ64GB004 family (looks like there are 4 devices in the family
initially).

seems to be a 48 pin chip, judging by the photos of the PIM module.

and from the linker file one can glean: -
USB-OTG
2 UARTS
2 SPI
5 Input Capture
5 Output Compare
a reduced number of RPI pins
a number of RPO pins - it looks like the RP pins that can be input or output
are dropped for uni-directional ones

haven't checked on I2C, although it retains an RTC, and has a 4th config
word that seems to set up the secondary oscillator and RTC, rather than
using the OSCCON register.

This lot just from a quick shifty through the help files and linker file.
