I just bought the following product.  Works well under Linux -- I
assume it also works well under windows, but have not tried it.  Great
product for the price!

Cliff,

have you try USB to serial converters. They are like 30-40 $
and there are lots of free rs232 software to capture data.
in between usb just add buffer like 7407. why pay $400

No serial convertor is going to be able to relay a 12Mbps
data stream. And the convertor only responds to data addressed
to it. The original poster wants to monitor a USB stream.
Presumably that means all the setup and handshaking too.

Have you tried this? I think you'll find that your USB -> RS232
convertor isn't going to just listen to a usb stream and output it as
RS232. USB devices need to be enumerated. I don't think just giving
one of these dealies +5V will be enough.

Hi Andre,

Interesting Idea -- do you have any links handy for the above software?

I generally like to put together my own solutions, but $400 was less
than it would have cost me to piece together something, so it was
simple economics.  I was also looking at the USB stream between an
embedded system host port and a device, so snoppy or other solutions
would not work there as the embedded system was the host.  Totalphase
has the right idea -- make a product that will pay for itself within a
day or two and you can't affort not to buy it.
