As a significant producer of PIC programmers one of our biggest problems is
getting physical samples of the new PIC chips for Tony Nixon to test and add.
So in September I went to the microchip site and ordered a chip sample.
Microchip responded immediately. I was impressed: the sample seemed to have
been sent by FedEx to me september 27

The sample never arrived.
Today I followed it up. I found that the sample had in fact been sent to
the Microchip head office in Hongkong where it arrived sept 28! It has sat
there one month with no action to send the last 2 miles to me. Now I have
tried to deal with the Hongkong office before. They just want 'big' (read
mainland Chinese) companies. They treat other people as small and simply
not worth dealing with.
The shipping advice implied that the sample had gone direct to me. Maybe it
is standard practice in the USA but Microchip did not tell me that I had to
collect the sample from the local sales office, quite apart from the
arrogance of the local office in dealing with 'small' customers.
I always enjoy using my Cantonese swear words (the Cantonese like the
French are among the most rude people on earth so the only way to live with
them is to adopt the same attitudes.) I may finally get my sample.....

In Canada the samples go right to the door. The only problem I've had
is that no human apparently looks at the order until it's ready to go.
If there's a problem then (perhaps weeks later) you get an e-mail notifying
you that it's been cancelled and you have to go back to the web site and
start again. Frustrating.

What would you recommend using on folks that cut in front at taxi queues?
I only know a few Mandarin ones.

If your swearing and cursing does not work: I have the F2010 in stock,
DIP-28 version. No problem to send you one :)
The routing of samples seems to be a mistery. I never had problems
getting mine. When I sample 3 TQFP chips they come in a full-sized TQFP
'grate' carrier, with moisture indicator, sealed, etc. And of course
when I sample 5 different TQFP chips they come in 5 separate shipments.

I've never had a problem with Microchip samples in the UK - very robotic in
their methods of ordering and delivery but they have always turned up
without any problems.
The best I've found so far have been Maxim/Dallas - excellent service and
I've been receiving free datasheets that make good reading on boring Friday
afternoons :)

He he, what do you expect from an automated system :-)

The same. Shippments to Sweden seems to come from the UK
office. A year ago they was shipping from the Philippines (I think)
using courier (1-2 days). It take a little longer using regular
mail from the UK. No problem, I get them for free anyway...

I always receive samples directly. They usually ship FedX from Thailand and
arrive here one or two days later. I've always found Microchip to be very
good about samples, but I do have a different interface being an official
PIC consultant.

I am planning to place an order for a Maxim part directly from their site,
which states 12 weeks for the part. Are they as reliable in their real
ordering system as their sampling system?

All I can say.....Maxim is great on samples of a few parts, but unless you are using MILLIONS...yes....thats millions.....availbility is the issue. Even Arrow, who is a disty, has issues with getting parts from them. I stay away...and its too bad because they do have tons of cool parts.

Well, I am planning ot place an order for 2000 units for MAX3741. Nobody
has them on stock. So I have to decide whether to order from Maxim, Digikey
or UK distributor. I am assuming my best bet would be direct ordering;
however, because the distributors order parts from them all the time, they
may get higher priority and may provide the parts to me faster. Unless,
Maxim ships the products to me as stated on their internet site.

If I'd been unsure, I'd asked Maxim directly.

I'm not an official PIC consultant, although I do seem to end up with
PICs in a lot of my work. I'm just a small consulting service,
specializing primarily in process control & monitoring for various small
industries.
Yet, Microchip has been VERY prompt on samples (less than 2 weeks from
request to receipt) and has never turned me down. They also ship
directly to me. However, I live in the U.S.A. and that may make a
difference as far as delivery is concerned.
Personally, I couldn't ask for more from Microchip.
Just my two cents worth!

That I will also do. I just wanted to see what the general opinion is. But
the best approach is to ask them directly as stated.
Thanks, Omer
